Spider-Man Actor Yuri Lowenthal Reveals His Favorite Version of the Marvel Hero (Exclusive)

As a longtime fan of Yuri Lowenthal‘s impressive body of work, I can’t help but marvel at his versatility as the voice of Spider-Man across various games and projects. It’s fascinating to see how he subtly tailors each interpretation of the wall-crawler to fit the unique world, story, and timeline of each game.

Known primarily for his role as the main voice actor in Insomniac’s PlayStation Spider-Man games, Yuri Lowenthal has lent his voice to Peter Parker on multiple occasions across various projects. From Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 and Marvel’s Midnight Suns to the upcoming Marvel Rivals game set for release in December, fans have had the pleasure of experiencing his interpretation of Spider-Man. In an interview with ComicBook regarding their forthcoming graphic novel Topsy McGee and the Scarab of Solomon, Lowenthal and his voice actress spouse Tara Platt discussed how his portrayal of the web-slinger differs between games. Essentially, while it remains “Yuri Lowenthal’s Spider-Man,” he has a favorite among all his “Spider-Babies!

Lowenthal: Every game I make, I tweak it slightly. This isn’t always a conscious decision, but since Insomniac’s Spider-Man was such a massive success and fans want some of that original feel in other games, I have to cater to that expectation, even though technically, that wasn’t my first Spider-Man game. That one is the one that stands out. However, due to differences in the game, world, setup, character, and timeline, each Spider-Man I portray is unique. So, I can’t simply reuse Insomniac’s Spider-Man across all other games, as it wouldn’t fit right.

Platt: Well, the writing is different.

Lowenthal: Each Spider-Man I play has its own unique style because the focus of the story varies. While there are similarities due to it being my interpretation, each game and collaboration results in a slightly different rendition of Spider-Man.

GameDeveloper: With my years of experience, does it sometimes happen that certain game developers grant me a bit more creative leeway when devising dialogue or witty remarks? Does the approach vary from one game to another in this aspect?

Lowenthal: Indeed, each team is unique, and so is the nature of the game they’re creating. When you have ample time for development, it allows for a certain degree of experimentation as everyone works out what strategies will work best. However, not all games have that luxury; some need to be released quickly, requiring precision in every aspect. Writing for video games is particularly intricate because it must cater to multiple formats and ensure seamless integration with the gameplay mechanics.

As a fan: With so many intertwining storylines, it’s hard to predict where things will end up. It’s an intricate web that leaves me guessing!

As a gamer embodying this character, I’ve found that sometimes the creators offer some flexibility, letting me add a touch of improvisation or work closely with them on certain aspects. Other times, they require strict adherence to the script. Yet, even when the guidelines are rigid, it doesn’t diminish the excitement of bringing a good story to life. I might occasionally find myself pausing and suggesting ideas, like “hey guys, what if… wait, can we try this instead?” But overall, it’s an incredible journey that I wouldn’t trade for anything else.

As a devoted admirer, I’d put it this way: For over two decades, he’s been spinning tales as hilarious as classic dad jokes. In our nearly quarter-century journey together, his humor has always been reminiscent of everyone’s friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. So, in essence, that’s the essence of him – a never-ending supply of good-natured laughs!

Lowenthal: Yeah, I’ve been training my entire life to play this role.

Platt: He can’t help himself because he makes puns automatically and they just come out.

ComicBook: Do you have a personal favorite version of Spider-Man that you’ve been?

User: I prefer Insomniac’s Spider-Man, it’s like capturing lightning in a bottle. The combination of the team, the plot, the gameplay, the narrative, the designs – everything just works beautifully on that one. I don’t want to play favorites…

Platt: You like all your Spider-Babies?

Translated Response: Correct, I have an equal affection for all my Spider-Babies. However, if I were to choose one, there’s a certain charm about the Insomniac Spider-Man that has won me over.
