Spider-Man Battles Resurrected Gwen Stacy in Gwenpool Comic!

Everything kicked off with a joke. In the year 2015, Marvel branched out the Earth-65 version of Gwen Stacy into her own comic titled “Spider-Gwen“, which was set in an alternate universe where Peter Parker perished and Gwen became the web-slinging superheroine Spider-Woman. Coincidentally, in the same year, Marvel initiated a cover series for “Spider-Gwen” inspired by other versions of Gwen, reminiscent of Peter Parker’s first true love who met her untimely end at the Green Goblin’s hands in the iconic 1973 issue #121 of “The Amazing Spider-Man“.

In this unique blend, one creation turned out to be just as beloved as Spider-Gwen herself – Gwenpool. Artist Chris Bachalo, known for his work on The Amazing Spider-Man and Deadpool, created a cover for Marvel’s Secret Wars tie-in series, Deadpool’s Secret Secret Wars #2. This cover depicted a character that combined aspects of Gwen Stacy and Deadpool, lounging in a pool. She quickly became a hit with cosplayers, leading Marvel to introduce her officially in the backup story of Chip Zdarsky’s run on Howard the Duck in 2015.

The three-part comic series “Ms. Poole if You’re Nasty,” penned by Chris Hastings and illustrated by Danilo Beyruth, unveiled that the character Gwenpool hails from a world (the “real world”) where Marvel Universe characters are actual comic book figures. It was clarified that she wasn’t a fusion of Spider-Man’s deceased girlfriend and Wolverine (Wade Wilson), but instead, she is Gwendolyn “Gwen” Poole. Hence, her name is a blend or portmanteau of these two names.

When Marvel revealed in February that they’d be reviving Gwen Stacy through a five-issue comic series called Gwenpool, fans were left scratching their heads. If the new series features a character who is part Gwen Stacy and part Deadpool, but neither of these characters are actually Gwenpool, then why the confusion?

Writer Cavan Scott was thrilled when he said, ‘What an incredible privilege! To disrupt not only Gwenpool’s but also Spider-Man’s universe? Sign me up!’ This is what he expressed when announcing the Gwenpool series. The character of Gwen Stacy has come back from the dead and is more lethal than ever before. She now possesses Weapon-X-like abilities and a sharp wit with cutting remarks. However, this isn’t the same Gwen you might remember. But who or what brought about her miraculous return? And what has become of the previous Gwenpool’s typically cautious life? The addition of characters like Kate Bishop and Jeff the Land Shark makes for a Marvel series that I’ve always wanted to write!

In collaboration with Stefano Nesi, the artist behind Batman, for his Marvel Comics debut, Scott expressed, “I couldn’t wish for a better artistic companion than Stefano Nesi! The extreme violence has never been more enjoyable, as every chaotic assault is vividly depicted through Matt Milla’s intense coloring. Prepare for monstrous creatures, chaos, and carnage as Spider-Man and Kate discover that nothing—or no one—is inviolable!

Take a peek below at the upcoming zombie version of Gwen Stacy in Gwenpool, featuring guest appearances by Spider-Man, Kate Bishop’s Hawkeye, Fin Fang Foom, and Jeff the Land Shark. This five-issue series will be available for purchase monthly starting May 14.
