This week at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, Marvel enthusiasts received long-anticipated information about the fourth Spider-Man movie within the Marvel Cinematic Universe: its title. The film, slated for release in 2026, has been named “Spider-Man: A Fresh Start.” Though the title may surprise fans due to its departure from the “Home” pattern of the previous three films’ titles, it also indicates the direction Peter Parker’s story will take – suggesting that Spider-Man: No Way Home is the MCU’s adaptation of Marvel’s most controversial Spider-Man tale, “One More Day.
Among all Spider-Man stories, “One More Day” stands out as one that has garnered significant criticism. This storyline, in which Peter Parker struck a deal with Marvel’s devil character Mephisto to save his Aunt May’s life, had severe consequences: not only was his marriage to Mary Jane Watson undone but the entire relationship was erased from their past, leaving them as strangers and resetting Spider-Man to an earlier status quo. This decision, made by Marvel editors to maintain the character’s relatability as a young, unmarried hero, has never resonated well with fans and remains a contentious issue to this day.
To fans of Marvel Cinematic Universe, the “One More Day” storyline had a chilling resemblance with “No Way Home”. In this movie, when Peter Parker’s identity as Spider-Man is exposed to the world and it begins causing harmful effects on those close to him, he turns to Doctor Strange for help. He asks Strange to cast a spell that makes everyone forget he’s Spider-Man. However, after making numerous alterations, the spell becomes tainted. Strange manages to contain the spell, but in doing so, it poses a grave risk to the multiverse. In the end, to protect multiple realities (and quite literally the world), Peter persuades Strange to cast the spell once more, erasing everyone’s memory of him – even MJ.
In essence, both “Spider-Man: No Way Home” and “One More Day” follow a similar narrative structure – they both revert Spider-Man (Peter) back to a prior state, isolating him from vital relationships that define his character. However, what sets “No Way Home” apart is that Peter acknowledges the cost of this reset, adding an extra layer of melancholy to the storyline.
The Brand New Day Comic Could Offer Clues to What’s Next for Spider-Man in the MCU
If “No Way Home” truly follows the narrative structure of “One More Day,” it could imply that the “Brand New Day” comics might hold significant influence over the forthcoming MCU film. In the “Brand New Day” series, Spider-Man was absent for a hundred days due to the Superhuman Registration Act. When Peter learns that the Daily Bugle is in dire financial straits, he reappears as a hero, hoping that images of him could rescue the newspaper. This story also sets up some key developments: Peter and Mary Jane’s relationship has ended, she’s dating someone else now, and there’s an entirely new supporting cast for Spider-Man, including both villains and allies.
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), the adaptation of “Brand New Day” will have its unique twists – for instance, the Daily Bugle’s circumstances are distinct in the MCU, and Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson were never married or teenagers. Also, the Superhero Registration Act wasn’t a feature. However, it’s likely that elements from the “Brand New Day” comic will be incorporated into the MCU storyline. Characters like Carlie Cooper might make an appearance, or we could see how the MCU reimagines Harry Osborn. This could help introduce characters seen in Sony’s Spider-Man related films, allowing Spider-Man to handle his own issues independently while the larger MCU tackles matters such as “Doomsday.” At this stage, virtually anything could happen.
It’s evident that the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is drawing inspiration from the source material, the comics, as it explores a fresh take on Spider-Man. Whether the cinematic narrative will prove more popular remains to be seen when compared to the original comic book stories.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is set to open in theaters July 31, 2026
