Dan Slott is returning Spider-Man to his roots. Over a decade since he introduced the new villain Mister Negative in the 2007 Free Comic Book Day: Spider-Man #1 and kicked off the Amazing Spider-Man’s Brand New Day era with issue #546, Slott is now revisiting the initial Brand New Day villain in the final installments of Spider-Boy. The eighteenth issue of Spider-Boy, penned by Slott and illustrated by Paco Medina, carries the title “Full Circle” and encompasses both past and present events.
The narrative unfolds three and a half years prior at the F.E.A.S.T. shelter (Food, Emergency Aid, Shelter, and Training), a charitable establishment founded by Martin Li, later revealed as Mister Negative’s disguise. At that time, Bailey Briggs, who would eventually become Spider-Boy, was residing above the F.E.A.S.T. facility with his mother, Tabitha. Coincidentally, Peter Parker’s aunt, May, also worked there alongside Tabitha.
As a movie critic, I must confess that what transpired in this film was nothing short of chilling. It wasn’t Mister Negative himself who orchestrated the abduction of Bailey and Tabitha; rather, it was his inner turmoil that took control. These tormented emotions led them both to the lair of Madame Monstrosity, an enigmatic figure infamous for her creations known as Humanimals. In a twisted turn of events, she manipulated Bailey’s DNA with that of a spider, giving birth to the terrifying hybrid, Spider-Boy.
In my own words as a fan, I’d say: Back in 2008 during the “New Ways to Die” arc in Amazing Spider-Man issues #568 to #573, Mister Negative boasted about his indestructible inner demons. He had planned to have an endless supply of these, but Spider-Man foiled that operation. In a twisted bargain, he proposed Madame M create an army of foot soldiers for him, offering her the kidnapped women and children as subjects for her grotesque hybrid experiments in return. As if that wasn’t enough, he casually handed her the keys to his domain.
Currently, my friend Christina Wu unearthed some keys stashed beneath the floorboards at F.E.A.S.T. She later carried them to First Kingdom Bank, where she was ambushed by the Inner Demons. Fortunately, Spider-Boy swooped in just in time for a daring rescue. As I follow this thrilling trail, I encounter Spider-Man and Christina Wu, with Captain Yuri Watanabe and the police cordoning off First Kingdom Bank – the scene of a bank heist. (Captain Yuri Watanabe is another creation of Slott, who gained prominence through her appearances in the Marvel’s Spider-Man video games.)
In a surprising twist, Spider-Man anticipates discovering bank robbers ensnared in his webbing, but instead, he encounters none other than Spider-Boy and Christina. It turns out they intend to use the keys to open Mister Negative’s secret lock boxes for the benefit of the F.E.A.S.T. Center, disregarding Spider-Man’s caution about the potential perils of meddling with Mister Negative’s ill-gotten gains.
In a turn of events, Mr. Unscrupulous makes an appearance at the bank and manipulates Yuri and her colleagues, gaining power over them. With instructions to open fire immediately upon approach, they plan to raid the bank… to be concluded later.
