Spider-Man Is A Jerk (And Honestly, I Think That’s Great)

When someone envisions Spider-Man, they picture the epitome of heroism in action. Within his universe, Peter Parker is widely recognized as a significant and impactful figure among superheroes. Other heroes admire and respect Spider-Man for his character and actions, with Daredevil even stating that Spider-Man stands out as the best among them. Furthermore, Peter has been chosen to impart the values of heroism upon Hope Summers, the mutant messiah.

In the revamped Ultimate Universe, Spider-Man was at the pinnacle of the list of characters who wouldn’t return in his world due to their heroic status. In Marvel Comics, Captain America is one of the few who can embody the values of heroism as admirably as Spider-Man, which underscores the significance of Peter Parker’s past behavior, given that he was once quite the cad.

In the opening chapters of volume 6 of “The Amazing Spider-Man”, Brian Nehring, an old friend of Peter’s whom he drifted apart from prior to his transformation into Spider-Man, made his debut. They were part of a close-knit group they named the Freaktastic Four, which was composed of outcasts who found common ground in their teenage struggles. It’s widely recognized that Peter had difficulty forming friendships as a child, and these companions provided support during times when he may have felt isolated. Unfortunately, this group had a negative impact on Peter’s life.

In the initial three issues, there aren’t many instances of flashbacks, but the ones that are there paint a picture of me cutting classes and engaging in scuffles. Issue #3 depicts me swiping Uncle Ben’s military jacket and causing a family ruckus, which culminated in my deciding to flee home and spend time with my friends instead. To be honest, I was quite the reckless and immature character during those days, far from the hero Spider-Man eventually became, and it was truly captivating.

Peter Parker Has Always Been Kind of a Jerk

Regardless of any recent revelations about Peter’s past friendships, it’s worth noting that Peter Parker has consistently carried a burdensome attitude since his debut. This is something many people may not fully grasp. For instance, while we’re all familiar with the tale where Peter had the chance to stop a robber who later killed his uncle but chose not to act, this incident was not an isolated occurrence in Peter’s life.

Back in the 60s, being a nerd was largely unwelcome and socially ostracizing. Given this environment, it’s likely that Peter often found himself at odds with his schoolmates. Flash Thompson, for one, is infamous for bullying Peter, and rightly so.

In essence, Peter Parker’s actions in the past, such as his inaction against the robber, were not unique instances but rather reflections of a deeper struggle he faced due to societal pressures and personal circumstances.

In essence, while Peter did experience ostracization, he contributed to it somewhat. His peers occasionally extended invitations for him to socialize, including Liz Allen who openly admired Spider-Man. Yet, Peter consistently declined their invites, not due to his commitment as Spider-Man but because he viewed them as unworthy of his time. Given his exceptional intelligence, Peter often perceived himself as superior to others, perhaps even looking down upon them.

Peter Parker, in his youth, recognized his intelligence yet grappled with a delicate self-esteem, poor social interactions, and an overwhelming sense of guilt and duties. In the initial stages of his superhero vocation, Peter was notably hot-tempered, often engaging in confrontations, particularly with fellow heroes. A simple gesture could trigger a spat between him and another hero. The bond that later formed between Spider-Man and the Human Torch began as a fierce rivalry, fueled by Spider-Man’s jealousy towards Johnny for having a girlfriend. To put it simply, if you picked up a random comic from the early days of Spider-Man’s career, you’d find him just as likely to be squabbling with a hero as he was a villain.

Peter Being a Jerk Actually Makes Him More Relatable

The significant aspect of Peter’s past behavior as an unkind individual is that he has since changed and is not a jerk at all today. Instead, Peter embodies heroism in its truest form, constantly doing what is right and striving to aid anyone he can. His transformation was not swift, but gradual – we witnessed Peter evolve over many years, both as a hero and as an individual. Peter’s growth was marked by lessons about empathy and understanding that people are complex individuals dealing with their own struggles, much like himself.

One significant reason Spider-Man continues to resonate as a character lies in his embodiment of a straightforward yet crucial concept: possessing power implies assuming its use for others’ benefit. Peter Parker grasped this principle following Uncle Ben’s demise, but he initially neglected the broader responsibilities that came with being a human being alongside being a hero. As time went on, Peter understood that true heroism demanded not only action but also compassion and understanding. Given his exceptional capacity for empathy, it becomes his duty to genuinely connect with others as well.

Spider-Man embodies the relatability of a common hero, suggesting that the mask could belong to anyone. His teachings on helping others are accessible to all. The fact that Peter Parker, once somewhat selfish, delivers this message with more impact. He transformed and improved, evolving into an admirable individual, but his path wasn’t straightforward. It was a genuine journey for Peter, one that underscores the importance of perseverance. Peter wasn’t innately heroic; he became one through dedication and the support of those around him. Everyone has the potential to be an extraordinary hero, and Spider-Man’s evolution demonstrates this possibility.
