As a gamer who has witnessed the rise and fall of numerous superhero adaptations, I can’t help but feel a strange sense of nostalgia when it comes to Daredevil. From the 2003 movie starring Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner, to the Netflix series that brought Charlie Cox into the limelight, and now the upcoming Disney+ series “Daredevil: Born Again”, the journey of this blind vigilante has been quite a rollercoaster.
Charlie Cox may be Marvel’s Daredevil to a generation of TV fans, but nobody — including Cox — has forgotten the 2003 feature film starring Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner. The movie, which got a bit of a wink in Deadpool & Wolverine earlier this summer, was almost shouted out in a much more subtle way in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Speaking at the Tampa Bay Comic Con, Cox told fans that, since he shared a scene with Jon Favreau’s Happy Hogan, it seemed only appropriate to acknowledge that Favreau had also once played Foggy Nelson to Ben Affleck’s Daredevil.
As a dedicated Marvel fan, I was all set to recreate the popular Leonardo DiCaprio meme at home using their latest game release. However, to my disappointment, one of the takes apparently included an off-the-cuff joke that didn’t make it past the editing room. So, for now, it looks like we’ll have to wait for another opportunity to bring that meme to life!
In the Spider-Man movie, Tom Cox had an opportunity to work alongside Jon Favreau, who he admires. Notably, Favreau appeared as Foggy in Daredevil (2003). They attempted to include a joke, serving as an Easter egg, during their exchange, where Cox’s character asks a question and Favreau’s character replies, “Yeah, I’m a bit hazy on that right now.” However, it is uncertain if this scene made it into the final cut of the film; I can’t recall for sure. During filming, we hoped that viewers would notice the subtle humor behind it.
2003 saw the release of “Daredevil,” a movie that received lukewarm reviews and modest audience interest. Despite making $179 million on a budget of $78 million, this wasn’t the success the studio had anticipated. To try their luck again, they produced “Elektra” in 2005, which was more of Jennifer Garner’s character’s solo adventure than a direct sequel. The production cost for this film varied between $43 and $65 million. Sadly, “Elektra” flopped at the box office, and until “Deadpool & Wolverine,” none of the characters from that movie reappeared.
Initially, “Daredevil” marked the beginning of Netflix’s collection of Marvel “Defenders” series. Adopting a ground-level perspective within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, this show unavoidably evoked parallels to the Marvel Knights comic book line, which reimagined various Marvel Comics titles during the late ’90s and early 2000s, featuring similar characters such as Daredevil. When Disney opted to establish their own streaming platform, they ended their agreement with Netflix, ultimately cancelling each show. Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdoch found himself in a holding pattern until his return to represent Peter Parker in “No Way Home”.
Yesterday, Marvel unveiled the initial glimpse of Charlie Cox as Daredevil in the upcoming Disney+ series, “Daredevil: Born Again.” This series will bring back the original cast from the Netflix version, but instead of being a mature-rated Marvel Knights production, this one is expected to align better with the broader Marvel Cinematic Universe.
In the series “Daredevil: Reborn,” actor Charlie Cox reprises his role as Matt Murdock/Daredevil, with Vincent D’Onofrio (Kingpin) and Jon Bernthal (Punisher) also joining him. Additionally, we have Wilson Bethel as Bullseye, Deborah Ann Woll as Karen Page, Elden Henson as Foggy Nelson, Ayelet Zurer as Vanessa Fisk, Margarita Levieva, Michael Gandolfini, Genneya Walton, and Arty Froushan completing the cast.
Daredevil: Born Again is expected to be released on Disney+ starting March 2025.
