Spider-Man: No Way Home Director Jon Watts Reveals Reaction to Spider-Man 4

As a gamer who has lived through the thrilling ride of Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and Star Wars, I find myself in awe of Jon Watts’ journey. From directing three standalone Spider-Man movies to now crafting a new Star Wars series, Watts has shown an extraordinary ability to navigate these iconic universes with grace and passion.

Jon Watts, who has directed the first three standalone Spider-Man movies within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is looking forward to experiencing the next MCU Spider-Man film as an audience member. Despite not being involved in the production of Spider-Man 4, he shared with Chris Killian from Comicbook.com that he will be there simply as a devoted fan.

Man, it feels fantastic to be back in the fan zone again! No more responsibilities, just pure enjoyment as a spectator. I’m absolutely buzzing for it! We chatted with Watts and his partner in crime, Christopher Ford, mainly about their fresh creation, Star Wars: Skeleton Crew. It drops on December 3rd, only on Disney+. Jude Law takes the lead here, playing a charismatic Force-user leading four kids on an adventure to find their way home. Can’t wait to hop on that rollercoaster!

John Watts devoted considerable effort and resources to the Spider-Man franchise before moving on. He was among six writers who contributed to the screenplay of ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’, but not for the subsequent two movies. Interestingly, he directed ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’ and later it was revealed in 2022 that he also did some motion-capture work as the character Sandman in ‘No Way Home‘. Moreover, he provided unacknowledged directorial input for ‘Venom: Let There Be Carnage’.

Switching to Star Wars and the Small Screen

It’s worth noting that Watts, who was previously linked to the Marvel Cinematic Universe only through specific projects, has now shifted his focus to another of Disney’s extensive intellectual properties. “Skeleton Crew” is set during the same era as “The Mandalorian” and other live-action “Star Wars” series, following the events after “Episode VI – Return of the Jedi”. This production has been described as a “galactic spin on the classic adventure films from Amblin Entertainment in the ’80s”, drawing inspiration from movies like “The Goonies”.

The movie titled “Skeleton Crew” was initially announced in February 2022, and by September of the same year, filming had commenced. This means that following the premiere of “No Way Home” in December 2021, Watts had minimal downtime. It’s important to note that filming for his last Spider-Man movie ended in March 2021, and by that time, plans for “Spider-Man 4” were already advancing. Watts was chosen to direct “Fantastic Four: First Steps,” but according to a report from Deadline, he departed the project as a way to step away from large-scale blockbuster films. Both Watts and Kevin Feige, head of Marvel Studios, confirmed that this decision was mutually agreed upon.

Director Destin Daniel Cretton, famous for helming ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’, has chosen to direct ‘Fantastic Four’ instead. Filming is anticipated to start around next year. The ‘Fantastic Four’ film is set to debut on July 25, 2025, while ‘Star Wars: Skeleton Crew’ will premiere on Disney+ this coming December 3rd.
