The Marvel films are known for including intricate Easter eggs, particularly in stories exploring the endless possibilities of the multiverse. These Easter eggs often hint towards other parts of the Marvel Cinematic Universe or acknowledge classic Marvel Comics characters and creators that influenced the movies. However, there are some obscure Easter eggs that even dedicated fans might miss, even upon multiple viewings. This seems to be true for Spider-Man: No Way Home, but surprisingly, this subtle Easter egg has no connection to Marvel at all.
In a chat with Screen Rant, directors Jon Watts (of Spider-Man: No Way Home) and longtime partner Christopher Ford discussed their latest project, Star Wars: Skeleton Crew. During the interview, Watts revealed that there’s a nod to the short films they used to produce and upload on YouTube in No Way Home – a subtle reference that has yet to be noticed by anyone.
Jon Watts shared an interesting tidbit about “No Way Home”: there’s an Easter egg hidden in the movie that no one has discovered yet. He added that finding our intentionally placed Easter eggs has been a challenge, but fans have managed to find quite a few. Additionally, he mentioned that occasionally, fans find Easter eggs that we didn’t deliberately include. When this happens, we just smile and appreciate their creativity. Lastly, there are some very obscure references in the movie to old YouTube videos that Ford and I made years ago.
Indeed, they tend to recognize characters from extremely popular films, but those that reference our own short films, it seems, often go unnoticed, he humorously pointed out.”
Or more informally:
“Yep, they get the big-name movie characters, but our short film references? Seems like people don’t catch those, Ford joked.
Prior to stepping into the big screen with 2014’s “Clown”, duo Watts and Ford had previously collaborated on several short films that they uploaded onto YouTube. It seems that one of these older movies, now over a decade past, is subtly referenced in “Spider-Man: No Way Home”, although the exact title remains unclear.
Watts isn’t alone among Marvel directors in hiding intricate Easter eggs in their movies, but his might be the most enigmatic. Just like Watts, James Gunn has kept fans guessing for years about a significant Easter egg tucked away in Guardians of the Galaxy. There are online communities devoted to uncovering this secret and deciphering what Gunn may have concealed.
