Spider-Man Producer Poised To Run James Bond Franchise (Is That a Good Thing?)

It’s being speculated that Amy Pascal, known for her work as a producer on Spider-Man, could take over the management of the James Bond franchise for Amazon MGM Studios. According to Puck, Pascal and David Heyman are in discussions with Amazon MGM about leading James Bond, but nothing is finalized until Amazon officially secures creative control from producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, who have been hesitant to relinquish their creative authority over the franchise. Reports emerged in February that Amazon was attempting to obtain creative control of the James Bond franchise from Broccoli and Wilson.

Previously, Pascal served as the CEO of Sony, but she resigned in 2015. She played a significant role in Sony’s “Spider-Man” films, although their initial reception was generally good, it wasn’t until Sony collaborated with Marvel Studios that the “Spider-Man” movies gained real momentum. Currently, Tom Holland is the star of the latest “Spider-Man” trilogy, and a fourth film in this series is currently being developed.

David Heyman is being considered for the position of leading the 007 project at Amazon. Given his experience with the Harry Potter series, including the spinoffs like Fantastic Beasts, Heyman is familiar with managing large-scale franchises. His portfolio additionally includes the films Gravity and the Paddington series.

Some supporters might find it difficult to accept Amy Pascal at the helm of James Bond over on Amazon, given her past controversy. Back in 2014, she was involved in a major hack at Sony that exposed private talks between her and producer Scott Rudin. In these discussions, Pascal was accused of making racially insensitive remarks about then-President Barack Obama. Moreover, many fans attribute the success of Tom Holland’s Spider-Man films less to Pascal’s production work and more to Marvel Studios’ impact and its connection to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

In February, when news about the shakeup in the James Bond franchise broke out, Mike Hopkins, who heads Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, remarked that ever since his debut on stage more than 60 years ago, James Bond has been an unforgettable figure in the world of filmed entertainment.

We owe a debt of gratitude to Albert R. Broccoli and Harry Saltzman for first bringing James Bond to cinemas globally, and to Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli for their tireless commitment in preserving and expanding this beloved franchise. We are privileged to carry on this cherished legacy and excited about the upcoming stages of the iconic 007 for audiences worldwide.

In an interview with CNBC, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy discussed their new ownership of the James Bond series. He mentioned, “We don’t have a specific plan for the next theme just yet.” He added, “No one has written the story so far. However, we will handle it with utmost care as it’s an exceptional franchise that we deeply value and intend to nurture over a prolonged period.
