Year after year, I’ve found myself utterly captivated by the exceptional quality of “Ultimate Spider-Man.” Each month, a fresh chapter unfolds, offering an innovative spin on classic Spidey tales that never fails to excite me. Issue #16 is no exception, delivering another knockout punch that leaves readers breathless. This installment does double duty, shedding light on the story of Gwen Stacy in the Ultimate Universe and unveiling the truth behind Ultimate Mysterio. “Ultimate Spider-Man” has consistently been a marvel (pun intended), but this issue pushes the boundaries even further, crafting a fresh, exciting narrative for those seeking a departure from the familiar. The new incarnation of Mysterio might just be the most compelling portrayal of the character ever conceived.
Spider-Man boasts an abundance of formidable enemies, surpassing any other hero, including Batman, in terms of A-list villains. One of the lesser-known antagonists in Spider-Man’s Sinister Six, Mysterio, has often been underappreciated but always harbored a depth that’s become apparent throughout the years. Yet, this fresh interpretation of Mysterio stands out among all the remarkable Spider-Man villain adaptations.
SPOILERS for Ultimate Spider-Man #16 beyond this point.
The Man of Mystery Taken to the Next Level
In the second issue of The Amazing Spider-Man, the character Quentin Beck, a skilled illusionist in special effects, made his debut. He was working on a show where Spider-Man was a guest, and as it was the Silver Age of Marvel, safety regulations like OSHA were not yet established. Beck’s creativity led him to make the special effects hazardous, much to Spider-Man’s agent’s delight. However, this stunt went awry, resulting in Beck losing his job. This unfortunate event set the stage for Beck’s transformation into Mysterio.
Initially, Mysterio relied heavily on smoke and mirrors, but as technology improved over the years, he was able to deceive even super-powered individuals such as Wolverine and Daredevil. His signature green gas has the unique ability to suppress Spider-Man’s spider-sense. Mysterio is one of the founding members of the Sinister Six and has collaborated with Kindred. In a controversial storyline, “Sins Past”, he was responsible for planting false rumors about Norman Osborn that led him to believe he had slept with Gwen Stacy. This deception sparked a complicated tale, ultimately serving as a pretext for the villain Mephisto in “One More Day” to want to destroy Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson’s marriage.
In the exciting world of comic books, I’ve always been captivated by the intriguing character of Mysterio. Known for his recurring role in Spider-Man’s rogues gallery, there’s something more to this enigmatic figure that’s yet to be fully explored. The latest iteration of Mysterio in the Ultimate Universe might just provide those missing pieces.
Here comes a shocking revelation – there are five Mysterios, each taking turns wielding the power granted by an amulet. And guess who was one of them before his untimely demise? None other than George Stacy. His daughter, Gwen Stacy, took up the mantle when he passed away. It’s been a secret she’s carried throughout the entire run of Ultimate Spider-Man, hidden even from her husband, Harry.
In the Ultimate Universe, Mysterio’s purpose diverges significantly from their counterpart in the 616 universe. They’re not merely a money-grabbing villain or a Spider-Man antagonist; they’re on a quest to uncover the secrets of the Ultimate Universe. Their goal is to find and expose the Maker, which explains why OsCorp sought control over Stark/Stane, and Gwen bankrolled Uncle Ben and J. Jonah Jameson. They possess crucial information, are hunting for more, and seek a means to broadcast it.
The latest issue concludes with an unexpected twist – Gwen as Mysterio saving Harry, leading Peter to believe he was dead, and then eliminating Kraven the Hunter. It seems Mysterio has a grand plan that’s nothing short of war.
Ultimate Mysterio Is Playing an Entirely Different Game
The comic series “Ultimate Spider-Man” is penned by Jonathan Hickman, widely recognized as one of Marvel’s top writers. Known for his knack with character development and a flair for crafting compelling villains, Hickman takes the fundamentals of Spider-Man and spins them into something unique and unparalleled in the world of Spider-Man comics. To put it simply, his reinvention of Mysterio encapsulates this approach perfectly. Hickman significantly alters the essence of Mysterio while keeping Quentin Beck as a member of the Mysterios’ collective, thereby enhancing and making the villain far more intriguing than before.
In the Ultimate Universe, Mysterio is more of an enigma, quite fittingly. They’re an uncharted entity. They are undeniably malevolent, given that Gwen is a lethal character, and they are part of Kingpin’s Sinister Six. Yet, their grand scheme, though selfless in some way, remains obscure. The world wonders what they intend to do with the revelation about the Maker. Moreover, hints at Harry and Gwen potentially confronting the world suggest that this new Mysterio might just be the greatest among all.
