The film adaptation of William Gibson’s “Neuromancer” is in progress, with Dane DeHaan, known for his role in “The Amazing Spider-Man 2”, officially joining the cast. Apple TV+ confirmed that DeHaan will portray Peter Riviera – a character who joins the crew of this iconic cyberpunk tale’s heist group. Earlier announcements have included Callum Turner as the main character, Case, Briana Middleton as Molly, Joseph Lee as Hideo, Mark Strong as Armitage, and Clémence Poésy as Marie-France Tessier. Filming is currently underway, though a release date has yet to be disclosed. Fans of the book eagerly await additional casting announcements, which seem to be emerging gradually.
1984 saw the publication of “Neuromancer,” widely regarded as the pioneer or one of the most impactful books within the cyberpunk subgenre. If it’s not the first, it certainly ranks high among influential works in this realm. The novel unfolds against a backdrop of high-tech, almost-future dystopia, and follows the tale of a man whose hacking prowess has been crippled by a professional mishap. Lured into an intricate heist under the pretense that his skills will be reinstated, he and his associates discover they’ve bitten off more than they can chew.
DeHaan takes on the role of Riviera, the skilled burglar within the team. It’s not a secret that he harbors a volatile temperament, which the team, including Case, picks up on right away and stays cautious around him. He doesn’t join them at the start of the operation, but rather after it’s already in progress. As things start to take an unexpected turn, Riviera is there with them.
In the movie “The Amazing Spider-Man 2”, DeHaan portrayed Harry Osborn, also known as the Green Goblin. However, he has a long list of notable roles to his credit. His journey in the geek culture sphere has seen its ups and downs, with “Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets” not meeting expectations. His latest film appearances were in 2023, where he played Kenneth Nichols in “Oppenheimer” and Brad in “Dumb Money”.
For a long time, fans have yearned for an accurate portrayal of “Neuromancer”, and DeHaan’s name kept popping up in discussions among fans as a potential cast member. Many viewers thought DeHaan could pull off the role of Case, but at 39 years old, some felt he was too old for the character who is meant to be just 24 in the book. However, with Turner, aged 35, now cast as Case, it’s evident that the show will adjust certain aspects of the storyline’s timeline.
The production of “Neuromancer” started filming in Tokyo back in January, indicating that the project is progressing steadily at this point. While Apple TV+ has been dishing out casting details and other updates, they haven’t announced a specific release date for the series just yet. Currently, Gibson’s book and its two sequels can be found in print, digital, and audio versions.
