Spider-Man himself, Hudson Thames, has clarified his earlier controversial remarks prior to the release of the new animated series. The storyline is set in a different universe where Peter Parker, the future superhero, receives assistance from Norman Osborn until Osborn’s malicious intentions are revealed. As Osborn was portrayed as a Black American character this time and several other diverse characters were featured, some racially charged comments surfaced online. Previously in January, Thames seemed to align with these commentators when he said, “my biggest concern was that it would be too preachy and politically correct.” However, on Tuesday, he clarified his statement in an interview on Get Rec’d, explaining what he truly meant.
Thames clarified, “It seems clear that some parts of my statement were taken out of context to create a stir. The conversation revolved around the time before the show’s release, and I noticed a lot of comments online expressing apprehension about whether our show was dealing with themes of diversity and equality authentically. This concern made me feel protective towards our show.
Thames continued, “The words I used weren’t great, but my intention was clear. Our series doesn’t need gimmicks or tricks, as I believe Jeff Trammell skillfully demonstrated by writing authentically. He naturally incorporated themes of equality and diversity into his story, making it feel organic rather than forced. In truth, this authenticity is what initially drew me to the show.
Despite January’s passing, numerous commentators granted Thames the advantage of interpretation, assuming he meant what they hoped. However, his statement did seem questionable at first. In fact, when talking to Collider, he expressed his appreciation for the show, saying, “It was amazing! My major concern was that it would be bothersome and overly woke, but it wasn’t. I was delighted because it’s so well-written and feels authentic, just like it’s real.
In response to those questioning the situation, Trammell previously defended Thames, stating on Reddit that Thames had merely misspoke and that this misunderstanding seemed to have troubled him greatly. Marvel Studios did not formally address this issue, but with Thames’ recent clarification, many commenters appear content that the matter can now be considered resolved.
