John Semper Jr., who spearheaded the creation of “Spider-Man: The Animated Series” in the ’90s, has shared his thoughts on Marvel’s decision to bring back the comic book version of this popular franchise. This series was instrumental in shaping future Marvel animated adaptations and served as an introduction to Spider-Man for many fans, much like “X-Men: The Animated Series”. However, Semper will not be involved in the new project titled “Spider-Man ’94”, which continues the storyline from “Spider-Man: The Animated Series”. He has elaborated on his decision to opt out of the revival.
John Semper Jr. addressed queries about the ’90s Spider-Man series on his Facebook page, clarifying that he isn’t associated with the comic book and Marvel hasn’t asked him to participate in any capacity regarding it. Although he praised J.M. DeMatteis for writing the series, he emphasized that he didn’t contribute to the storyline details.
He mentioned that he personally decides where the series will go plot-wise, but it’s important to note that these decisions are not ones I made creatively, and they don’t indicate any lack of supervision on my part.
Semper went on to say, “Indeed, it would have been considerate if Marvel had contacted me at some point. However, I’ve given up hope long ago that they would acknowledge my part in shaping the Marvel universe, such as the concept of ‘Spider-Verse.’ I wish them success and encourage everyone to join in the joy during this 30th anniversary year of Spider-Man: The Animated Series. Keep an eye on my social media platforms, particularly YouTube, because I plan to commemorate my series very soon! In the famous words of my mentor, Stan Lee… ‘Enough said!’

30 years after the conclusion of “Spider-Man: The Animated Series,” Spider-Man ’94 will finally offer a resolution to the cliffhanger left by that show, where Spider-Man ventured into the multiverse to save Mary Jane. Additionally, this new series will introduce characters from the comic book universe who were never featured in the original animated show.
In a conversation with IGN, DeMatteis expressed his excitement about revisiting the universe of the 1990s Spider-Man animated series, which served as an introduction to Peter Parker’s world for many. He described this venture as stepping back into that same universe. They plan to continue the storyline by introducing fresh villains, obstacles, and adventures for Peter, all while staying faithful to the creative essence that John Semper and his team instilled in the original show.
