In a fresh new start for The Amazing Spider-Man, there are some familiar elements that remain unchanged from the previous series, such as an ongoing debate-worthy romance and a recurring antagonist. The debut of The Amazing Spider-Man #1 finds Peter Parker in a distinctly different phase of life, while reintroducing one of Spider-Man’s most formidable foes – the Hobgoblin. The Hobgoblin’s latest exploits appear to revolve around a potent mind control substance, suspected to be provided by the new adversary Hellgate. Caught in its grip, Spider-Man battles hallucinations of his deadliest enemies. Remnants of the hallucinogenic effects persist throughout the issue, and it’s none other than his arch-nemesis – Norman Osborn, aka the Green Goblin – who saves him from the drug’s worst consequences.
Over time, the bond between Spider-Man and Green Goblin has taken an unexpected twist. Initially, Green Goblin had been intent on eliminating Spider-Man since his teenage years, but in recent days, they’ve found themselves working together as allies. This shift in their dynamic is quite remarkable, leaving fans speculating when the Green Goblin might revert back to his villainous nature. The entire scenario is undoubtedly one of the most intriguing developments in Spider-Man lore, especially considering the complex history between Spider-Man and Green Goblin.
Green Goblin Has Become One of Spider-Man’s Most Trusted Allies
To understand the origin of this predicament, we need to revisit the story where Norman Osborn bonded with the Carnage symbiote, transforming into the Red Goblin. Spider-Man faced numerous trials during his confrontations with the Red Goblin, eventually managing to sever the connection between Osborn and the symbiote. The symbiote’s demise resulted in a psychic shockwave that caused brain damage for Norman, causing him to believe he was Kletus Casidy. Left at Ravencroft, Norman was later freed by Harry, who turned out to be his secret son, Kindred. He became embroiled in the “Absolute Carnage” narrative and Carnage’s defeat allowed Norman’s mind to return to its original state. Blaming the Carnage symbiote for his recent transgressions, everyone bought his excuse. As a result, Norman was able to resume his life as a successful industrialist, and when Wilson Fisk became New York’s mayor, he appointed Osborn as a consultant at Ravencroft Institute.
In his customary schemes, Green Goblin collaborated with the group called J.A.N.U.S., aiming to restore John Jameson’s ability to morph into Man-Wolf. His plan was successful, leading to Kingpin appointing him as director of Ravencroft. This new position, however, soon had Osborn drawn into Kindred’s assault on Spider-Man. Kindred rejuvenated the villain Sin-Eater, granting him the power to absolve others of their transgressions. Sin-Eater opted to target Norman Osborn, leading to a joint effort between him and Spider-Man against Sin-Eater and his troops. At one point, when Osborn provoked Spider-Man about Gwen Stacy, he was thrown into the hands of Sin-Eater, who absolved Norman of his wrongdoings. This incident set the stage for the current predicament, where Spider-Man found himself needing Norman Osborn’s aid after Mary Jane ended up in another dimension. To everyone’s surprise, Spider-Man and Osborn proved to make a formidable team.
Osborn Warns Spider-Man About His Current Situation, but Spider-Man Ignores Him
The second issue of “The Amazing Spider-Man” begins with Spider-Man under the influence of a potent hallucinogen, perceiving his deadliest foes all around him. In a chaotic scene, he damages numerous vehicles and the surrounding area. Mysteriously, he winds up at his latest job. Later, he finds himself perched atop a building, unsure of how he arrived there. Norman Osborn rescues him, taking him to the lab for testing. Norman informs him that the poison is still circulating in his body and he should be cautious. Predictably, Spider-Man disregards Osborn’s advice, leading to a shocking revelation at Ravencroft.
As a movie enthusiast, I must confess that watching Norman Osborn assist Spider-Man still feels strange, given their past enmity. However, the latest episodes of “The Amazing Spider-Man” have cleverly exploited this unusual scenario, forging an unexpected bond between them. This alliance, though it strips Spider-Man of his arch-nemesis, has proven to be a fascinating dynamic. Though hints suggest its impending demise, for now, it stands among Spider-Man’s most intimate relationships. The friendship between Norman and Peter has been mutually beneficial and honestly, I find myself reluctant to see it come to an end.
