In a city far from Spider-Man’s New York base, the characters from “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” – Mac, Dennis, Dee, Charlie, and Frank – have left an indelible mark on pop culture. Though they may not be superheroes in the traditional sense, their impact is undeniable. Interestingly, the latest animated Spider-Man series decided to pay tribute to “It’s Always Sunny” by replicating one of Charlie Kelly’s iconic scenes in its fourth episode. This suggests that the showrunners behind the wallcrawler are indeed fans of the Philadelphia-based sitcom.
In the fourth installment of “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man,” titled “Hitting The Big Time,” Peter Parker collaborates with Norman Osborn to enhance his crime-fighting alter ego. Drawing inspiration from the comic book saga, “Identity Crisis,” which eventually spawned independent lives through the Slingers team, Peter experiments with various costumes to find the perfect fit for his outfit. Adopting a design reminiscent of Spider-Man’s time with the Future Foundation in the comics, our dear Aunt May’s nephew fails to deliver the Paddy’s Pub Easter Egg. Instead, the villains of the fourth episode claim this amusing reference.
It’s Always Spidey in Philadelphia
Towards the finale of episode four, we observe four fresh antagonists trying to flee with the loot from a recent heist. Mila Masaryk, Roxanna Volkov, Mikhail Systsevitch, and Dmitri Smerdyakov are making their escape in a van while the police attempt to halt them. Mikhail warns his accomplices that he’s unpredictable, prompting Mila to take drastic actions, such as kicking open the back door and jumping out of the speeding vehicle. Mikhail later acknowledges Mila as the wildcard, a statement that seems strangely reminiscent of Charlie Kelly and his friends.
The scene being referred to here is from “The Gang Solves The Gas Crisis,” an episode in the fourth season of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.” In this episode, set at Paddy’s Pub, Charlie claims he is the “wildcard” and cuts the van’s lines before jumping out, causing his friends to react unexpectedly. Although not confirmed, it’s possible that a reference to this moment was made in “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man,” as the circumstances seem to align with Paddy’s Pub’s chaotic atmosphere.
A Friendly Neighborhood
Just as I’ve come to expect from Spidey-centric animations, “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man” is expertly paving the way for upcoming baddies. It turns out our character Mila is none other than the enigmatic Unicorn, a villainess whose powers were granted by none other than the future Doctor Octopus – yes, Otto Octavius himself! As for Peter Parker’s alliance with Norman Osborn, it’s left viewers reeling. Will Osborn eventually become the Green Goblin? Only time will tell, but one thing’s for sure: this partnership is bound to leave a lasting impact on the series moving forward.
At the moment, you can find the initial five installments of “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man” on Disney+. Fresh episodes are released each Wednesday.
