Spider-Man’s New Cosmic Champions

In the realm of the Spider-Verse, fresh talent is emerging. Marvel has been hinting at a cosmic clash between the Spider-Verse and Venomverse, with their survival hanging in the balance. The results of the five-issue series titled “Spider-Verse vs. Venomverse” will decide whether every Spider or Symbiote throughout the multiverse lives on or is wiped out forever. The Web-Heart (the lifeblood of the Great Web of Life and Destiny that binds the Spider-Verse together) and its symbiotic counterpart are selecting their representatives. This selection process is depicted in two companion issues: “Web of Spider-Verse: New Blood” #1 and “Web of Venomverse: New Brains” #1.

Initially, we have “The Spider-Verse Web” in focus. This expansive web network, known as the Web of Life and Destiny, is being investigated by the Web-Heart, following the selection of its initial fighters: a commander (Earth-616’s Peter Parker), a joker (Spider-Ham), a rebel (Recluse), a weapon (Weapon VIII), and two yet-to-be-unveiled heroes – an artist and an orphan. These could potentially be Hobie Brown/Spider-Punk and the time-displaced Gwen Stacy/Ghost-Spider.

With just one decision left, the Web-Heart releases its awareness along the strands of the Fate and Life Web, pondering over three potential choices…

Spider-Hulk

In the ’90s comic series “Web of Spider-Man” #70, written by Gerry Conway and David Michelinie, with art by Alex Saviuk, Spider-Man was transformed into the enraged Spider-Hulk when a machine exposed him to the Hulk’s bio-energy. By the end of the issue, he managed to reverse his transformation. However, the character “Spider-Hulk” from writer Greg Pak (of “Incredible Hulk”) and artist Alan Robinson (known for “Deadpool vs. Wolverine: Slash ‘Em Up”), is based on a reality where Peter Parker remains the strongest Spider around.

Since Spider-Hulk’s immense power allows him to safeguard his wife, Mary Jane, from Spider-Man’s foes, he no longer needs to conceal his true identity. However, when the enraged Spider-Hulk defeats adversaries like the Green Goblin and Doctor Octopus, but almost kills the rampaging Rhino, he becomes a fugitive on the run. The melancholic tune of “The Lonely Man Theme” seems to play as Peter, similar to Dr. Bruce Banner, discovers that the Hulk’s power brings about a cost: “You won’t lose battles anymore… just everything else.

Count Parker

The comic ‘Count Parker,’ penned by Jordan Morris (Youth Group) and illustrated by Sumit Kumar (Spider-Man: Black Suit & Blood), is a thrilling tale that unfolds in the year 198X. The story revolves around Mary Jane van Helsing, a vampire hunter, as she ventures to Count Parker’s mansion with the intent of eliminating the titular character, Fang. According to folklore, Count Parker attempted to resurrect his deceased uncle using the venom of an eternal spider known to be a vampire, transforming himself into a living vampire Spider-Man.

1. Mary Jane Helsing, descendant of Van Helsing, discovers Count Parker’s lab teeming with human-animal hybrids – Vulture, Scorpion, Doctor Octopus, Rhino amongst them, trapped in tubes like experiment subjects. She later encounters Count Parker. As Mary Jane experiences a vision of herself alongside Peter Parker in multiple realities, she hesitates to drive a stake through his heart and instead gets bitten and transformed. In this universe, Count Parker and MJVH share an eternally twisted fate.

2. Mary Jane Helsing, a relative of Van Helsing, stumbles upon Count Parker’s lab filled with human-animal hybrids – Vulture, Scorpion, Doctor Octopus, Rhino amongst them, enclosed in tubes as test subjects. She eventually confronts Count Parker. As Mary Jane experiences visions of herself with Peter Parker across various realities, she hesitates to stab him and gets bitten instead, becoming a vampire. In this universe, Count Parker and MJVH enjoy a forever-twisted destiny together.

3. Mary Jane Helsing, the heir of Van Helsing, uncovers Count Parker’s lab housing animal-human hybrids – Vulture, Scorpion, Doctor Octopus, Rhino amongst them, all trapped in tubes for testing purposes. She subsequently locates Count Parker. As Mary Jane glimpses herself with Peter Parker in numerous realities, she hesitates to drive a stake into his heart and instead gets bitten, turning herself into a vampire. In this universe, Count Parker and MJVH live out an unholy happily ever after together.

4. Mary Jane Helsing, a scion of Van Helsing, finds Count Parker’s lab filled with human-animal hybrids – Vulture, Scorpion, Doctor Octopus, Rhino amongst them, caged in tubes for experiments. She then comes across Count Parker. When Mary Jane envisions herself with Peter Parker in alternate realities, she wavers to plunge a stake into his heart and gets bitten instead, becoming a vampire. In this universe, Count Parker and MJVH share an everlasting twisted ending.

5. As the bloodline of Van Helsing, Mary Jane Helsing unearths Count Parker’s lab filled with human-animal hybrids – Vulture, Scorpion, Doctor Octopus, Rhino among them, confined in tubes as test subjects. She eventually finds Count Parker. As she envisions herself alongside Peter Parker in various realities, she hesitates to drive a stake through his heart and gets bitten instead, transforming into a vampire. In this universe, Count Parker and MJVH share an eternally twisted fate.

Spider-Prowler

As a movie reviewer, I’d say: “In ‘Spider-Prowler,’ penned by Mat Groom of the Spider-Verse and co-written with Federico Vicentini, the tale takes us to the gritty, post-apocalyptic New York City of Earth-2501. An invasion by the Kree army has left this world in ruins, with most of its inhabitants wiped out and those with enhanced abilities hunted down.

Aaron Davis, the Prowler, and his nephew, Miles Morales, are among the few survivors. Miles was bitten by a mysterious spider while scavenging for supplies, adopting the identity of Spider-Man. After his uncle’s tragic death during a mission to disable a human-hunting scanner aboard a Kree control ship, Miles becomes the anti-hero, Spider-Prowler. This hardened hero is chosen by the Web-Heart as his final champion in this gripping tale.

In the comic series “Web of Venomverse: New Brains” issue 1, available from April 2nd, the Symbiote-Brain will independently decide its choices. Meanwhile, the epic battle known as the Arachnid War initiates when the clash between “Spider-Verse vs. Venomverse” (issue 1 of 5) hits stores on May 14th.
