Beware: The following discussion delves into crucial plot points from episodes 9 and 10 of Spider-Man titled “Hero or Menace” and “If This Be My Destiny.” Marvel Studios’ animated series has reimagined the classic Spider-Man tale, deviating from the traditional origin story. The transformative spider bite transpired during Doctor Strange’s (Robin Atkin Downes) multi-dimensional conflict with a Venom-like extraterrestrial symbiote (Kellen Goff). Furthermore, Norman Osborn (Colman Domingo), head of Oscorp, is shaping the young Peter Parker (Hudson Thames), a 15-year-old high schooler and budding superhero.
The final episodes of the season on Wednesday, reminiscent of the first episode, featured a spider with unknown origins, which had previously bitten Peter and escaped on a classmate’s backpack via a web strand. Since then, as your friendly neighborhood Spiderman, Peter has been collaborating with Norman and Harry Osborn (Zeno Robinson) to seize illegal weapons manufactured by Otto Octavius (Hugh Dancy). These weapons have become a source of contention in a power struggle between criminal groups: the 110th, headed by Big Donovan (Leilani Barrett), and the Scorpions, led by the brutal and mentally unstable Mac Gargan (Jonathan Medina).
With Great Power…
Following the painful sting of the Scorpion’s tail and watching Lonnie Lincoln (Eugene Byrd) chase after Gargan, Peter was given a harsh motivational speech by Norman. He urged Peter to stop being gentle and withholding, as “with great power comes great responsibility.” Dressed in a fresh red-and-blue suit, a determined Spider-Man leaped into action to prevent the 110th from seizing a truck filled with equipment and technology taken from Octavius’ lab after his arrest by Iron Man (Mick Wingert), who was operating under the Sokovia Accords.
As the season unfolded, Lonnie found himself deeply involved with the gang. When Big Don was frightened away by the Scorpion, Lonnie stepped up to take charge of the group. In a rush to seize an advantage for the 110th against the Scorpion’s gang, Lonnie inadvertently dislodged a container of the hardening chemical gas Diox-3. This accident gave him skin as tough as Tombstone, significantly increasing his strength.
The Scorpion Stings But Once
However, when it appeared that Scorpion had killed Lonnie, a furious Spider-Man came close to skewering Scorpion with his own stinger. But someone managed to prevent him from taking things too far by reminding him that with great power comes great responsibility.
After the Scorpions were vanquished, the almost indestructible Tombstone assumed command over the 110th, while Norman seized Octavius Tech in order to complete Oscorp’s clandestine project: genetic experiments on spiders aimed at duplicating Spider-Man’s DNA and producing even more Spider-Men.
Strange Tales
In a hidden bunker beneath Oscorp, Norman revealed Project Monolith – an entrance to outer space – developed in collaboration with Peter and other Oscorp interns: Anjali Kuanpaneni (Jeanne), Erica Luttrell (Asha), and Aleks Le (Amadeus Cho). By harnessing the limitless riches of the cosmos, Oscorp aimed to equip humanity with power equal to that of the Avengers and other extraterrestrial forces who once united to defend Earth during the Battle of New York.
Prior to Norman activating the gateway, Doctor Strange, the sorcerer, unexpectedly materialized through a teleportation spell, cautioning against the exploration of cosmic realms. Although Peter was familiar with Strange from his orientation day at Midtown, Strange maintained that he had never set foot in the institution. It was intriguing. As Norman grew confrontational towards superpowered individuals such as Strange and the Avengers, accusing them of being responsible for the devastation leading to Project Monolith and the Superhuman Registration Act, he triggered a wormhole — ultimately opening a passageway to Klyntar, the symbiote’s home planet.
If This Be My Destiny…!
In their joint mission against the recurring symbiotic creature from the initial episode, Spider-Man joined forces with Doctor Strange. Meanwhile, not-Venom orchestrated a breakout from Oscorp’s lab, releasing a lizard, snake, tarantula, mouse, and a genetically modified spider in the process. With the Eye of Agamotto, Doctor Strange opened a portal to send the symbiote back to its original dimension. Consequently, the spider, Doctor Strange, and the alien found themselves back at Midtown High School during orientation day, just as they had been at the start of the series.
As a devoted cinema enthusiast, I’d rephrase that thrilling revelation as follows: In the climactic season finale, it was Spider-Man who closed the time portal just as the closing vortex sliced through Oscorp’s web-strand, causing the spider to plummet from the heavens and bite Peter. (So, was it the bite that gave him his powers or did he get them beforehand?)
1) Spider-Man and Doctor Strange successfully sealed the portal containing an alien symbiote on the far side of the dimensional gateway. However, a fragment of this symbiote was inadvertently left behind, which Norman later found. As they contemplated the potential effects of time travel — such as creating alternate timelines — Spider-Man came to understand that it was his fate.
In summary, Spider-Man and Doctor Strange managed to close a portal housing an extraterrestrial symbiote at its other end; nonetheless, they unintentionally overlooked a tiny fragment of the symbiote, which Norman collected later on. Pondering the possible ramifications of time travel (like creating multiple timelines), Spider-Man recognized his destiny.
He shared his conviction that events destined to occur eventually come to pass in one way or another, sometimes making sense, other times not, and occasionally causing immense pain. Yet, he accepted it all, for these experiences guide us towards fulfilling our intended destinies. In this instance, he acknowledged that this was the person he was supposed to become. Unseen and unheard, Uatu the Watcher observed this significant event unfold.
As a cinema enthusiast, let me rephrase it in the first person perspective:
I, Peter, could no longer rely on Oscorp or Norman, so I decided to call it quits with my internship. Yet, I’m not venturing out alone. With Harry providing the capital for our company focused on nurturing young prodigies, we extended invitations to the inaugural class of WEB: the Worldwide Engineering Brigade. In the final scenes, Spider-Man swung off into an unpredictable yet promising future. And in a surprising twist, Aunt May paid a visit to an inmate in prison – my father, Richard Parker.
The first season of Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, consisting of all 10 episodes, is currently available for streaming on Disney+. Marvel Studios has also confirmed that they will continue the series up to season 3.
