Spider-Noir Casts Li Jun Li in Nicolas Cage's Spider-Verse Series

As a longtime fan of both comics and cinema, I couldn’t be more thrilled about the upcoming live-action series “Spider-Noir” on Prime Video, starring the brilliant Nicolas Cage in the title role. The announcement that Lamorne Morris, known for his work on “New Girl,” would be joining the cast as Robbie Robertson, along with Brendan Gleeson in a villain role and Li Jun Li as a singer at a premier nightclub in New York, has only added to my excitement.

Last year, it was announced that Prime Video would be producing a live-action series based on Spider-Man Noir, with Nicolas Cage set to star, having previously lent his voice to the character in “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse“. The show is now referred to as “Spider-Noir”, and an impressive lineup of actors has been announced for the cast. Lamorne Morris, known from “New Girl”, will play Robbie Robertson, while Brendan Gleeson is shrouded in mystery as a villain. Today, it was disclosed that Li Jun Li, who gained recognition through “Wu Assassins”, is also joining the project.

Based on the report, Li is portraying the role of a singer at New York’s top nightclub. At present, she is involved in shooting scenes for Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan’s untitled vampire project. The start of production for “Spider-Noir” is undetermined, but the series will supposedly premiere on MGM+’s traditional TV channel within the US and on Amazon Prime Video worldwide.

I’ve had the privilege of interviewing some incredible talents in my journalistic career, but my recent conversation with Chris Morris was particularly captivating. He shared his excitement about being nominated for an Emmy award for his role as Whitley “Witt” Farr in the fifth season of FX’s crime anthology, Fargo. But what truly piqued my interest was when he brought up his long-held dream of acting in a world that deviates from reality.

He expressed, “Growing up immersed in comics and animation, I’ve always dreamt of joining that realm. This project merges those universes. It’s a comic book adaptation, live-action, with Nick Cage and Brendan Gleeson involved. Therefore, being a part of this team is an absolute must-do for me.”

What Is Spider-Noir About?

As a gamer, I can tell you that in the game “Noir,” I step into the shoes of an aging, disillusioned detective named Cage. Set in the gritty streets of 1930s New York, my character is compelled to confront his past as the city’s lone superhero. It’s a complex narrative that unfolds with intrigue and suspense as I navigate through the challenges of my dual identities.

Harry Bradbeer, a director who has won an Emmy Award for his work on shows like “Fleabag” and “Killing Eve,” will direct the first two episodes of an eight-episode series. He will also serve as an executive producer alongside co-showrunners and executive producers Oren Uziel and Steve Lightfoot. The pair developed the series in collaboration with Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the visionaries behind “Spider-Verse,” and Amy Pascal, a producer for Sony’s “Spider-Man” films. All three will also act as executive producers.

As a gamer, I can’t help but be in awe of Cage’s ability to breathe life into a singular character with such depth and emotion. Katherine Pope, President of Sony Pictures Television Studios, expressed the same sentiment, stating that “only Cage could bring the pathos, pain, and heart to this role.” Vernon Sanders, head of television at Amazon MGM Studios, also shared his excitement, expressing that the Oscar-winning actor from “Leaving Las Vegas” and “Longlegs” is an “ideal choice” for our new superhero.
