Spider-Verse Creators Lord and Miller Likely Out at Sony TV

As a seasoned gamer with years of immersion in various comic book universes, I must admit that the news about Sony and Phil Lord & Chris Miller’s deal has left me feeling a bit like Spider-Noir himself – hanging in the wind.

Based on recent information, it appears that Sony Pictures Television may not be extending their partnership with filmmakers Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who are behind both “The LEGO Movie” and “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse“. The report indicates that Sony, initially hoping to establish a Spider-Man TV universe with their collaboration, have grown dissatisfied as only one show – “Spider-Noir” – has been produced so far. There have also reportedly been disagreements over budgets between Sony and the filmmakers. Additionally, the first series conceived under this partnership, titled “Silk: Spider Society”, with Angela Kang as showrunner, did not progress after two years of development.

Sony’s success with Spider-Man spinoff movies has been mixed. While the Venom series has been a huge hit for them, movies like Morbius and Madame Web have not garnered the same level of acclaim or box office success.

According to Puck’s analysis of major deals during the “Golden Age of TV,” this particular deal is essentially defunct because Sony’s desired Spider-Man elements have not developed as they had hoped, despite the acclaimed Apple TV+ anthology series “The Afterparty.”

In the upcoming live-action series “Spider-Noir,” produced by Prime Video and MGM+, Nicholas Cage will once again take on the character of Spider-Man Noir (this time in live action).

“In March, he stated that we had been discussing the topic. It’s well-known that he adores the character, as he put it then. He expressed his desire to blend iconic performances from the golden age of cinema, such as those by Robinson, Cagney, and Bogart, with a character often regarded as Stan Lee’s magnum opus. He views this as an exploration into a pop art fusion, akin to a Jungian Lichtenstein blended with elements of Bogart and Cagney, but at this point, nothing is set in stone. It’s merely a conversation.”

As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled to share that being part of the journey to broaden the Marvel universe through the ‘Noir’ series feels like a one-of-a-kind privilege. Vernon Sanders, head of television for Amazon MGM Studios, expressed this sentiment in a statement. We can’t wait to serve our global Prime Video audience with this extraordinary series. The exceptionally gifted Nicholas Cage is an ideal fit for our new superhero character. Moreover, the talented team behind Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, Amy Pascal, and Sony Pictures are dedicated to developing this franchise authentically, underlining their commitment to quality storytelling.

According to its official summary, Spider-Noir presents a tale of a hard-boiled, past-his-prime detective (Cage) in 1930s New York City. Circumstances compel him to confront his former identity as the city’s lone superhero from yesteryears.
