As a die-hard fan of Saturday Night Live (SNL), I must say that this season is shaping up to be a rollercoaster ride! The Spirit Halloween skit during the show’s 50th season premiere was nothing short of hilarious, with Heidi Gardner, Mikey Day, and Chloe Fineman brilliantly portraying Spirit Halloween employees taking digs at their own business.
Spirit Halloween had some haunting words for Saturday Night Live.
Following the premiere of the long-running sketch comedy series satirizing Spirit Halloween’s seasonal store takeovers on September 28, the company swiftly responded. In retaliation to the show sharing the skit on Twitter (previously known as X), Spirit Halloween’s account posted, “We excel at reviving the dead, @nbcsnl.
On the packaging for a generic version of a well-known character from an outdated TV series that’s no longer relevant, the description read “Obsolete 50-year-old television program.
The packaging provided details such as expired references, unidentified actors, and decreasing viewership. On the side, instead of a costume image, the emblem for the 50th official SNL season was displayed.
SNL did not respond to the burn.
Within the scene, actors Hedi Gardner, Mikey Day, and Chloe Fineman portray Spirit Halloween staff members bantering over the store’s six-week tour across the nation, setting up shop in empty businesses.
Heidi criticizes the store by commenting, “Spirit Halloween has been assisting our financially strained communities since 1983. They establish their business in empty buildings across the nation for a span of six weeks, only to move on afterwards.
As a devoted follower, I’d like to echo Chloe’s sentiments about Spirit Halloween. This store doesn’t just offer spooky decorations; it plays a significant role in catering to the needs of vulnerable communities. From itchy wigs to single-use fog machines and subtly altered costumes of well-known characters, they manage to walk the line between authenticity and avoiding legal complications, all while delivering Halloween joy.
The bit ended with one of the employees talking about just how fast Spirit Halloweens leave following spooky season saying, “Nov. 1, we’re gone, and all this junk will be in a dumpster.”
The debut of Saturday Night Live’s season 50 was graced by Jean Smart as the host, and Jelly Roll served as the musical guest. Besides the Spirit Halloween sketch, several skits from that night garnered attention. On September 29th, Bowen Yang defended himself on social media against accusations that he ridiculed Chappell Roan while portraying Moo Deng, a baby hippo, during Weekend Update.
Wow, ‘criticizes’? I thought that was obvious from my stance and the post itself, but here goes: On Instagram on September 29th, he commented over an article screenshot saying, in essence, ‘I suppose it is clear that she has always asked for reasonable things, and even then we can tie it to another story about respect or similar issues. I could really use a cool-down right now…’
