1047 Games developer team has shared that they’re planning to unveil an early version (alpha build) of their multiplayer shooter game called “Splitgate 2” on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. In this alpha phase, gamers will have the opportunity to test a fresh 24-player mode where teams consisting of 8 players each face off against one another in intense competition.
1047 Games’ main writer, Nate Dern, shared insights on the PlayStation Blog about their journey as a new game developer and emphasized that player feedback plays a crucial role in shaping the development of Splitgate 2.
In contrast to Dern’s appreciation for the game’s arena mode, the alpha version emphasizes a Multi-Team Portal Warfare mode. This mode is characterized as an exhilarating, chaotic brawl experience. Gamers can test out this mode during the Splitgate 2 alpha on PS4 and PS5 from February 27, with the limited-time availability lasting until March 2.
In the sequel of “Splitgate 2”, you’ll find yourself stepping into the role of a modern athlete, known as an Ace, participating in high-stakes, televised combat events. During gameplay, you’ll have the freedom to select your preferred arsenal, and what sets this game apart is its innovative portal gun feature. This tool lets you create instant teleportation points, enabling you to outmaneuver opponents by quickly transporting yourself to strategic locations on the battlefield.
Individuals who have experienced Valve’s Portal series may recognize a similar concept in Splitgate 2, as both games employ a mechanic that utilizes momentum in a comparable fashion.
In a quest to elevate this game we adore to greater heights, we are committed to preserving its roots: an engaging portal shooter with exhilarating maneuvers and thrilling weapon interactions that are simply delightful to experience. To achieve this goal, we’re consistently refining our design based on feedback from both internal and external playtests, ensuring that our unique portal system, dynamic movement mechanics, and exceptional gunplay remain the key elements that differentiate us from all other first-person shooters available today.
Ian Proulx, creative director of Splitgate 2 and the studio’s CEO, has expressed his ambition for the upcoming shooter game to surpass the success of its predecessor. In a recent interview, Proulx shared his aspiration to break free from the “Halo meets Portal” label that the original Splitgate was known for. Instead, he aims for Splitgate 2 to establish its unique identity and make a mark in the gaming world, even amid comparisons.
In January, Proulx commented that the tagline “Halo and Portal met was fitting for our team with no marketing funds. However, for this sequel, we aim to blaze our unique trail, not just be known as the team merging ‘Halo and Portal.’ Although those games have been a massive influence on us, Splitgate 2 should stand out independently.
To get a glimpse of Splitgate 2 in motion, a quick-tempo multiplayer shooter recently revealed a trailer at The Game Awards, highlighting its three distinct factions and demonstrating the central aspect of creating portals.
The anticipated sequel to “Splitgate” is set to launch in the year 2025, and it’s expected to be available on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S platforms.
