The day following the announcement of layoffs from Splitgate 2 developer 1047 Games, they’ve now shared additional news: they will be refining the competitive multiplayer shooter by returning it to its beta stage. As reported by IGN, the studio has disclosed their intention to carry out a comprehensive overhaul for Splitgate 2.
In the meantime, the team at the studio has confirmed that they will maintain the playability of Splitgate 2 and proceed with the scheduled content updates, including the upcoming Chapter 3 release. Additionally, you can expect some bug fixes in the game. Noteworthy, developers 1047 Games consider Splitgate 2 as “finished” at this stage, but plan to revisit it in 2026 with major modifications and improvements.
In an interview with IGN, CEO Ian Proulx shared that the team had been listening closely to player feedback from a Reddit post where they asked why players were no longer playing Splitgate 2. Moreover, during the conversation, Proulx acknowledged that Splitgate 2 is currently still under development.
He admitted that the current state of the game doesn’t give off the impression of a fully launched product, despite our best efforts to present it as such. Instead, it feels more like a beta version, with numerous bugs yet to be ironed out and some essential features missing. While every game doesn’t necessarily need all the features, there are certain elements that should be included in a completed game. The bug count is too high, and we’re starting over.
Regarding future changes to Splitgate 2, as stated by Proulx, the focus is primarily on three key areas: enhancing fundamental features such as leaderboards and progression systems based on community feedback, adding more locations where portals can be opened within normal matches, and modifying game modes. However, there appears to be some uncertainty about the specifics of altering game modes.
One of our main goals is to create an experience similar to traditional arena-style gameplay,” he explained. “While I can’t yet specify the details, I believe we’ve developed several mode types based on rounds, and we’ll continue to include these, but players want to engage in shooting action, enjoy themselves, and possibly complete objectives.
In the process of revamping the entire game, Proulx has assured that Splitgate 2 will remain a free-to-play title, ensuring players won’t lose any items they’ve previously purchased from the in-game store. However, he also mentioned plans to streamline the in-game monetization, but refunds will not be provided.
In the process of revamping Splitgate 2, developer 1047 Games has additionally announced that they will be closing the servers for the original Splitgate. Before these servers go offline in approximately a month’s time, the studio is considering options to enable offline or peer-to-peer matches as a potential solution.
