1047 Games, creators of the upcoming multiplayer shooter Splitgate 2, have expressed a desire in an interview that the game surpasses its inspirations such as Halo and Portal. In a conversation with PCGamer, Ian Proulx, the creative director and CEO of the studio, discussed their ambitions for the project, hinting at potential expansions that could make Splitgate 2 larger than its predecessor.
Essentially, the difference between the original Splitgate and Splitgate 2 can be explained by the studio’s increased resources. With their earlier game, marketing limitations meant they could only emphasize its similarities to Halo and Portal. However, with more resources now at hand, the studio aims to establish Splitgate 2 as a unique title in its own right.
Proulx commented, “The tagline ‘Halo meets Portal‘ was fitting for our team with no marketing funds, but for the sequel, we aim to carve out our unique path. We don’t want to simply be known as the ‘team behind Halo meets Portal‘, as those games have been a major influence. However, Splitgate 2 should stand on its own merits.
Additionally, Proulx discusses how advancements in the creation process of Splitgate 2 have prompted the team to consider its future development as well. This is due to the observation that the initial version of Splitgate didn’t offer substantial longevity for a consistent player community.
He mentioned analyzing the aspects of Splitgate that received high praise from fans, as well as identifying areas where it seemed to lack in maintaining long-term engagement.
Instead of focusing solely on the initial release of Splitgate 2, the studio aims to learn from popular live service games like Apex Legends and Fortnite, which have been successful in keeping players engaged over time. Consequently, while many players enjoyed the early version of Splitgate and left favorable reviews on Steam after brief play sessions, very few returned to the game.
Proulx shared that “Splitgate” initially began as a school project, which he co-founded with a friend in our college dorm room. At the time, our team consisted of less than 20 individuals, working with limited resources. Despite our raw talent and passion, we were quite inexperienced, he noted. Reflecting on our journey, Proulx emphasized that the key lesson learned from “Splitgate” was the significance of Live Ops.
Proulx added, “Our short-term player retention was exceptional, matching the best in the shooter genre. Players would play Splitgate for roughly four weeks, enjoy themselves, leave positive reviews – we’ve a 92% positive rating on Steam – but then they’d run out of new experiences. Games like Apex Legends, Call of Duty, Fortnite, Valorant would release major updates, drawing players back. The main takeaway is the critical role this aspect of game development plays; understanding it and moving swiftly in addressing it is vital.
The last glimpse we had of Splitgate 2 came from the studio sharing a fast-paced and portal-leaping gameplay trailer. This trailer provided us with an in-depth view of the game’s central portal mechanic, demonstrating how different elements like weapons would intersect with portals created by players.
2025 marks the anticipated year when this game will be unveiled on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. However, a specific release date has not been set as of now.
