SpongeBob SquarePants Is Autistic, Actor Tom Kenny Reveals

As a lifestyle expert with a deep appreciation for pop culture and its ability to reflect and influence our society, I find Tom Kenny’s recent revelation about SpongeBob SquarePants being autistic to be both intriguing and meaningful. Having grown up watching Nickelodeon and SpongeBob being a staple of my childhood, I have always admired the depth and relatability of this beloved cartoon character.

Your favorite sponge who lives in a pineapple under the sea has had a superpower all along.

Tom Kenny, the actor behind the voice of SpongeBob SquarePants, has recently revealed that this beloved Nickelodeon character, whom he’s portrayed since its inception in 1999, exhibits traits consistent with being autistic and falling on the autism spectrum.

During a Q&A session at Motor City Comic Con in Detroit this year, Tom shared an interesting detail about a past conversation he had with a fan on this topic.

In a video shared by a fan, Tom Kenny shared that he had been asked an unfamiliar question for the first time. A person with clear signs of being on the autism spectrum approached him and inquired, “Do you, Tom Kenny, believe SpongeBob is autistic? Is the SpongeBob character itself represented on the autism spectrum?”

“‘Yes! Of course!'” Tom recalled telling the fan. “‘Of course he is.'”

Tom didn’t pause there, adding instead, “You realize that’s just his special ability, similar to yours.”

And the comment from Tom clearly had an effect on fans of the show.

I’ve always had a knack for understanding that person so clearly, and now it all makes sense to me. That fan on X (previously known as Twitter) expressed my thoughts exactly on July 23rd. It’s amazing how this newfound knowledge brings us even closer in relation.

The 62-year-old’s remarks about this topic have recently become widely shared online, but this isn’t the first time he’s spoken out on the issue.

He expressed on Marc Maron’s WTF podcast in 2012, as reported by The Independent, that he wasn’t sure what specifically appeals to children on the autism spectrum about that particular show. However, he noted that SpongeBob’s character seems to exhibit some autistic traits – being overly focused on his job and deeply engrossed in things.

Twenty-five years after the Krusty Krab’s debut on Nickelodeon, devoted fans continue to uncover fresh insights about their beloved character, SpongeBob SquarePants’ co-worker Squidward Tentacles. Recently, it came to light that he identifies as part of the LGBTQ+ community.

In June 2020, the network paid tribute to Pride Month by posting a picture on social media. The image featured SpongeBob next to actor Michael Cohen, known for portraying Schwoz Schwartz in “Henry Danger,” who identifies as transgender. Also included was Korra from “The Legend of Korra,” a bisexual character. Their caption read, “Honoring and celebrating the LGBTQ+ community and their supporters this month and always.”
