Get ready to step into the arena once more, where Suzanne Collins has penned a new prequel titled “Sunrise on the Reaping.” This time, we’ll delve into the story of Haymitch Abernathy, who won the Games during the Second Quarter Quell, a staggering 24 years before Katniss Everdeen’s participation. Interestingly, despite twice as many contestants entering that year, it was only Haymitch who survived to tell the tale.
Throughout the Hunger Games trilogy, there isn’t much information given about Haymitch’s time in the arena beyond the fact that he emerged victorious, performed an act that infuriated the Capitol, resulting in the deaths of his loved ones, and set him on a path to becoming a solitary drunk. In Mockingjay, it is shown that he sees himself as nothing more than a grim warning for the victors who followed him. However, Collins now intends to share Haymitch’s complete story with readers.
Sunrise on the Reaping isn’t the only new title taking readers back to a familiar spot, however.

Personal Perspective: Finally, I’m sharing the untold truth behind Haymitch Abernathy joining the Hunger Games for the Second Quarter Quell, and it’s every bit as intense and emotional as you might imagine. Suzanne Collins delivers a grim masterpiece with “Sunrise on the Reaping,” which may very well be her most harrowing work set in Panem yet. Despite its dark themes, there are still glimpses of hope for the future, much like in the previous series installments. What’s more, it includes numerous references to both “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” and the original trilogy, even bringing back some familiar characters.
Back in 2012, I stumbled upon an intriguing journal penned by a Lutheran pastor from 1912. In this diary, he narrates his encounters with a mysterious figure—a Blackfeet man, or so it seems, yet there’s something more sinister lurking beneath the surface: Good Stab, a vampire. This gripping narrative unfolds across three distinct eras (2012, 1912, and the time of the tragic Marias Massacre in 1870 where approximately 200 Blackfeet people were brutally killed by the U.S. army). The story weaves a chilling tapestry of murder, vengeance, and supernatural elements that add an eerie depth to the narrative.

Backman’s novels are always worth reading, and that’s because he’s truly exceptional. In “My Friends”, he takes us on a journey through two different time periods. The story revolves around a group of teenagers who spend a life-changing summer together, and a woman 25 years later who is captivated by a painting depicting three of those friends. She becomes determined to uncover the stories behind these people and the location that served as the backdrop for their lives. In typical Backman style, it’s a poignant, sometimes sad exploration of life, loss, and the relationships that support us.
