Ted Price, creator of Sony exclusive developer Insomniac Games, has revealed his decision to retire from the company today. Established as Xtreme Software back in 1994, Price played a significant role in bringing to life iconic franchises like Spyro the Dragon, Ratchet & Clank, and Resistance. In a post on the PlayStation Blog, it’s been announced that he will be succeeded by three new co-heads of the studio starting March.
In the collaborative blog post, Ryan Schneider, Jen Huang, and Chad Dezern expressed their feelings by stating: “Announcing that Ted is retiring from Insomniac Games continues to stir up strong emotions within us as much when we ponder it as when we write about it. We, Chad, Jen, and Ryan, have had a close working relationship with Ted for numerous years. He’s not merely our supervisor; he’s a long-standing friend whom we deeply appreciate.
During the PlayStation 2 era, I became a part of the incredible team at Insomniac Games, working in their marketing and communications department. Over time, I climbed the ranks, eventually taking on senior roles as head of brand and strategic leadership. Simultaneously, Huang joined the team eight years ago, starting in the finance department. As we look back on the 12 games we’ve released since my initial day here, I can’t help but feel incredibly excited about the extraordinary gaming experiences we’re poised to create for players in the future.
Regarding Dezern, he became part of the team back in 1998, holding diverse roles ranging from environment artist to studio director. From this experience, I discovered that innovation thrives when skilled individuals construct upon one another’s ideas while also encouraging each other to grow professionally. In my upcoming position, I am eager to collaborate with Ryan and Jen to uphold Insomniac’s legacy of creative camaraderie.
Collectively, they expressed, “Our unified goal is to maintain the unique essence that has kept Insomniac distinctive for over three decades, while simultaneously finding ways to strategically progress for future success. Our focus will remain on fostering our studio culture, emphasizing transparency and teamwork. We aim to create an environment where employees can achieve their career-best work.
In a different piece, it was detailed by Ted Price that he chose to step down from the gaming sector around last year, and communicated this decision to his team members just recently. He further added that Insomniac requires individuals in leadership roles who deeply understand their methods, and identified Schneider, Huang, and Dezern as those individuals.
Chad, Jen, and Ryan have played crucial roles in shaping Insomniac into what it is today. Over the years, I’ve witnessed them spearhead significant projects that have significantly improved the lives of our team members. Their teamwork and openness are in line with our core values, and their unique skill sets work harmoniously.”
