It appears that Tifa fans may have been disappointed as Square Enix has refused to confirm which party member is best for Cloud Strife in the Final Fantasy VII Remake and Rebirth. This response comes after a number of articles were published, with director Naoki Hamaguchi clarifying that their intention was never to sway players’ personal interpretations, following viral quotes from an interview he gave Inverse in December.
The December interview found Hamaguchi describing Aerith as a “character reminiscent of a supportive sister,” but this perspective wasn’t favorably received by many dedicated Aerith fans. In an interview with Automaton, a platform that caters to both English and Japanese speakers (thanks, IGN), Hamaguchi speculated that the disagreement may stem from language differences.
From a devoted fan perspective, I’m excited to share that as the visionaries behind this captivating universe, we’ll persistently weave the intricate connections among our characters within our stories. For instance, we won’t be issuing any official declarations about who Cloud might feel for, or Aerith for that matter, leaving those romantic entanglements to unfold naturally in the narrative itself.
