Square Enix Drops Another Big Final Fantasy 9 Remake Hint With New Music Recording

There’s no definitive confirmation yet, but it seems highly likely that Square Enix is working on a remake of Final Fantasy IX. The company has dropped quite a few hints without giving much away, and fans are picking up on them. This year marks the 25th anniversary since the RPG was first released on PlayStation, and Square Enix has been vague about “several projects” they’re working on. One of these projects is an anniversary vinyl titled “Timeless Tale.” Recently, Square Enix unveiled a new recording of the track “Melodies of Life,” adding fuel to the speculation fire.

I’m thrilled to share that Emiko Shiratori, who originally sang “Melodies of Life,” is back to perform it once more! In a recent video posted by Square Enix, the recording is overseen by Nobuo Uematsu, the game’s original composer. Many fans on Reddit have pointed out that this seems like an extraordinary amount of work for just a vinyl soundtrack release to celebrate the game’s anniversary. To be honest, it feels like the kind of dedication we’d typically see from Square Enix if they were working on a full-scale remake of “Final Fantasy IX” instead! Without any new context or setting, a fresh rendition of an older song might seem irrelevant. Nevertheless, there have been numerous whispers and clues about a remake for “Final Fantasy IX” since as far back as 2021. The remake was hinted at in a leaked list from Nvidia’s GeForce Now. When this list was made public, Nvidia stated that it contained speculative titles. However, many of the games on that list have since been officially announced and even released. Unlike these games, the remake of “Final Fantasy IX” has not yet been formally announced. Still, enthusiasts are eagerly anticipating an announcement, and Square Enix appears to be attentive to the rumors surrounding it.

This year appears to be an ideal moment for a reboot of Final Fantasy IX to be revealed. Given Square Enix’s history of unveiling new projects at Geoff Keighley’s events, it’s plausible we might catch a glimpse at Summer Game Fest next month. However, the publisher may also choose to announce it on July 7th, marking the game’s 25th anniversary. There’s also speculation that the remake won’t be released until 2026, which means we could be in for a longer wait. Ultimately, only time will tell if Square Enix is setting the stage for something significant with all this buildup.

Even if we don’t get a remake of “Final Fantasy IX” this year, there are still many exciting things for fans to look forward to. The upcoming Timeless Tale vinyl is promising, and we can expect various other merchandise such as figures and plush toys.
