Almost five years after its initial launch, Square Enix has recently discontinued support for the mobile version of Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered Edition, available on Apple devices. The game seems to have been removed from the App Store, and Square Enix’s website no longer shows the iOS version of Crystal Chronicles among its other supported platforms. As stated in a company press release, this decision was not premeditated. Instead, an issue surfaced where players couldn’t access their in-game purchases after Apple implemented some changes, and Square Enix could not find a solution to the bug. Consequently, they decided to withdraw the game instead.
Due to modifications in our in-app purchasing system, we’ve encountered a bug that we can’t fully resolve and adapt to the new changes simultaneously. As a result, it seems unlikely we can restart service for the game version on iOS. Consequently, it is with regret that we announce the discontinuation of support for the iOS version of FINAL FANTASY CRYSTAL CHRONICLES.
Refund requests for purchases made from January 2024 up until now can be submitted by customers on the Square Enix website. Unfortunately, individuals who haven’t made any purchases within this timeframe are not eligible. It should be noted that the impact of this situation has only been experienced by users of the iOS version of Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles. The game continues to function smoothly on Android devices and can still be acquired for play on PS4 or Nintendo Switch. Despite the disappointing news about the game’s removal from iOS, there are still alternatives available for those who wish to continue playing it.
Originally launched as an exclusive for Nintendo’s GameCube console, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles deviated from the traditional turn-based combat of the series by focusing on multiplayer dungeon crawling. A distinctive feature of the GameCube version was its compatibility with the Game Boy Advance, enabling each player to have their own individual screen during gameplay. Although this requirement sometimes caused inconvenience, it garnered positive feedback from both players and critics. In 2020, Square Enix made Crystal Chronicles available on contemporary platforms, swapping the previous GBA requirement for online multiplayer. However, opinions on the updated version were not as favorable as those of the original release.
To put it in my own words as a dedicated fan, I wasn’t shocked by the news, but it certainly stirred up a lot of frustration within our community. The situation with Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles may differ from past mobile titles, but it’s hard not to compare it to other Square Enix games that were suddenly absent from mobile platforms. It’s disheartening to see this trend in the world of mobile gaming, which is one reason why many of us are cautious about investing time and energy into these games. Unfortunately, for those who primarily game on iPhone or iPad, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles isn’t playable at the moment.
