Square Enix Wonders Why Life is Strange: Double Exposure Didn’t Work Out

Life Is Strange: Double Exposure was released in October 2023, but it seems to have underperformed financially, causing Deck Nine Studios to conduct a second round of layoffs in 2024. It appears that Square Enix, the publisher, expected more success or at least a better game from Double Exposure. Given that Deck Nine’s previous Life is Strange project, True Colors, was critically acclaimed and didn’t have the original protagonist, Max Caulfield, it seems there were high expectations for this spin-off.

In response to wanting to improve their games, Square Enix has distributed a questionnaire (courtesy of PSLS) to gather opinions from fans and identify areas that need improvement. With a PS5 Metascore of 73 and a user score of 4.2, it’s evident that something might have been misplaced in the process, as compared to True Color’s ratings of 81 and 6.9 respectively.

The questionnaire, named “Calling all Life Is Strange enthusiasts: We value your opinions!”, gathered thoughts and emotions from fans regarding Double Exposure’s narrative, gameplay mechanics, and technical aspects. It further sought insights on whether participants found the game worth buying and if their experience impacted their anticipation for future installments in the series.
