As a devoted fan of gripping dramas and nail-biting suspense, I have to say that the anticipation for the final season of Squid Game is overwhelming. Having watched the series from its inception, I can attest to the masterful storytelling and captivating characters that have kept me on the edge of my seat week after week.
Having faced my own financial struggles in the past, the themes of economic desperation and survival resonate deeply with me. The games in Squid Game serve as a chilling reflection of our society’s darkest fears, where the pursuit of wealth can lead to unspeakable horrors.
The cliffhanger ending of season two left us all hanging on the edge of our seats, eagerly awaiting the final showdown between Gi-hun and the enigmatic Front Man. I’m excited to see how the story unfolds, and whether our protagonist will finally succeed in dismantling the games once and for all.
One thing is certain – the final season of Squid Game promises a rollercoaster ride of emotions, shocking twists, and unforgettable moments that will leave viewers talking long after the credits roll. I can hardly wait to see how it all ends!
Oh, and let me tell you, if the games ever come knocking on my door, I’m definitely not going to be one of those people playing Red Light, Green Light – I’ve got better things to do with my time! 😉
CAUTION: This piece encompasses significant spoilers from Squid Game Season 2, detailing character demises and the ending’s resolution. Proceed with caution if you haven’t watched it yet or are okay with learning major plot twists.
The highly popular Netflix series “Squid Game,” created by Hwang Dong-hyuk, will reach its climax with a thrilling third season set to air in 2025. After the anticipated release of season two on December 26, 2024, fans can look forward to a resolution rather than another three-year wait. The already filmed and post-production phase of this final season will provide the long-awaited conclusion to Seong Gi-hun’s mission for retribution.
To be completely honest, during the creation of the first season, I hadn’t even dared to dream about more seasons. Yet, as I shared with Entertainment Weekly, the strain of writing and directing the initial season left me with a few less teeth than I started with! However, the extraordinary success of the show shifted my outlook dramatically. The eagerness and anticipation from fans about Gi-hun’s next move was palpable, and I didn’t want to leave it hanging. It felt almost like a personal mission or duty to continue unfolding that narrative.
Where Season 2 Left Us
In the heart of the narrative, I found myself at the climax of season two, where a valiant uprising was met with an unfortunate defeat. With Os leading the charge against Xs, Gi-hun masterminded a daring scheme to dismantle these games once and for all. The rebellion seemed promising as contestants managed to take down guards and seize their weapons, but then, the tide turned grim when the Front Man unveiled his true nature.
In a heart-wrenching climax, Gi-hun and Jung-bae advance towards the control room, battling fiercely through numerous gunfights. At a critical juncture, Gi-hun selflessly hands over his remaining ammunition to In-ho to aid their mission – an act that ultimately leads to disaster as In-ho treacherously turns against them, shooting and killing his comrades. Revealing himself as the Front Man, he then brutally executes Jung-bae in full view of Gi-hun.
In the dwindling supply of ammunition, Myung-gi and Hyun-Ju are compelled to retreat to their living quarters, only to be surrounded by guards who declare the rebellion over. The final scene of the season leaves an air of enigma, as characters 096, 100, and 353 are shown walking towards Young-hee’s statue alongside a new statue, while a green light illuminates.
What to Expect in Season 3
Creator Hwang has promised an intensifying story arc for the final season.
He shared with Variety that with every episode, things will improve. As we move through each season, expect a richer and more gripping narrative, one that’s bound to keep you captivated. So, make sure to stick with it until the very end!
The final season will focus heavily on Gi-hun’s emotional state following his failed rebellion.
Teasingly, Hwang pondered, “With everything lost, including his cherished friend, and all his efforts ending in disappointment, one wonders, what kind of person will Gi-hun become now? What condition is he in? Will he carry on with the task at hand or throw in the towel? Or perhaps he’ll keep pushing forward?

The Stakes
In the last season, it’s not just Gi-hun’s personal conflict that needs to be settled, but also the destiny of the entire game. As Hwang wrote in a letter to fans, we can expect a decisive battle with a clear victor, hinting at a resolution for the intense struggle between the two realms.
Despite a staggering 45.6 billion won (around $31 million USD) yet unclaimed, the games persist in luring participants with their lethal storylines, demonstrating the enduring impact of financial incentives on the unfolding plot. This ongoing theme mirrors the series’ critique on economic hardship and survival struggles.
Release Timeline
Although Netflix hasn’t specified an exact release date yet, they have confirmed that the new season will be available in 2025. Industry experts are predicting that it may adhere to season two’s release pattern and premiere towards the end of 2025, potentially during the holiday season. Creator Hwang has given some clues about a more precise timeline.
He mentioned that they’ll share the release date for season 3 before long, and it might be during the summer or autumn of the upcoming year.
Notably, Hwang’s method for constructing the last season diverges from his customary artistic workflow.
Typically, when I embark on creating a script, I first envision the conclusion and then strive to craft an engaging route leading to that endpoint. However, in this case, things took a unique turn. Initially, I conceptualized the story with a specific finale in mind, but as I progressed, I recognized that the story wasn’t meant for that destination. As a result, I altered the ending during the writing process itself.
Marketing Teasers
Though a complete trailer hasn’t been unveiled yet, the season finale hinted at future events with sneak peeks. In the post-credit scene, we saw the return of Young-hee, the famous Red Light, Green Light doll, now accompanied by a new character named Cheol-su. The backdrop was a beautiful sunset. As the railroad crossing signal switched from red to green, it indicated that the remaining contestants will face fresh life-threatening hurdles ahead.
As the climax of a worldwide sensation nears, viewers are anticipating the unique mix of thought-provoking societal analysis, gripping human tales, and unexpected turns that have made Squid Game Netflix’s most prosperous series so far. The only uncertainty left is whether Gi-hun will ultimately manage to dismantle the games or if the Front Man’s sinister plan will triumph.
Squid Game is streaming on Netflix.
