As a spectator who has witnessed the captivating journey of Squid Game characters, I find myself deeply moved by the complex portrayal of the enigmatic Salesman, brilliantly played by Gong Yoo. His character’s actions, though seemingly senseless and cruel, resonate with a poignant undercurrent of empathy and self-loathing.
Warning: Contains minor spoilers for Squid Game season 2 episode 1.
In the second season of Squid Game, available on Netflix, the initial episode commences with an edge-of-your-seat atmosphere. The plot unfolds through a surprising spin on a classic Russian roulette game and introduces a confusing and merciless contest called “Bread or Lottery.
The narrative resumes several years post the initial season, as Squid Game victor Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) is frantically seeking a means to return to the lethal competition with the objective of dismantling it.
He assembles a team of many workers to comb through the Seoul subway system, aiming to locate the smartly dressed salesman (portrayed by Train to Busan’s Gong Yoo), who can be distinguished by his habit of playing ddakji with strangers at train stations.
In an unexpected turn of events, instead of encountering the Salesman at Gi-hun’s residence, the homeless individuals in the city park find themselves offered a choice: a simple bread roll or a lottery scratch card.
Many choose to purchase a scratch card, harboring dreams of improving their lives financially, yet none of them end up winning any cash prizes.
In a heartless move, the Salesman ends the game by scattering the leftover bread rolls onto the ground and stomping on them wildly while a crowd of hungry onlookers watches. However, one may wonder why he would perform such an absurd and thoughtless action.
He stated that Gong Yoo’s character [the Salesman] experienced a challenging, harsh, and seemingly hopeless existence, similar to the portrayal of homeless individuals within the series.
He’s a person who’s overflowing with self-contempt, which manifests as contempt for other human beings. By despising these individuals, he thinks he sets himself apart from them.
Hwang commented: “[He appears to] display and communicate his disdain towards those who opt for lottery tickets over bread, almost like he’s attempting to flee from his own self-contempt.
As the show progresses, it becomes clear that the Salesman exhibits minimal guilt or apprehension about his deeds, openly acknowledging that he has never encountered any ethical reservations regarding his part in organizing the Squid Game, having been associated with the group since his teenage years.
Regarding the crucial showdown between Gi-hun and the Salesman in Squid Game, Lee Jung-jae commented: “Although Gong Yoo’s role in Squid Game is relatively brief, I believe it left a lasting impression on me, and I was truly amazed by his acting skills.
In the narrative of season 2, Gong Yoo performs exceptionally well, setting the plot in motion, guiding the storyline, and giving viewers an insight into future events.
I’m thrilled to share that after much anticipation, Squid Game Season 2 has officially dropped on Netflix! With the holidays approaching, I can hardly wait to dive in and see how the story unfolds for these captivating characters.
