Squid Game English-language series ‘in the works at Netflix – with David Fincher eyed to direct’

As a seasoned cinema enthusiast with a penchant for international productions and a soft spot for David Fincher’s cinematic brilliance, I find this news both intriguing and promising. Having witnessed Fincher’s mastery over crime thrillers like Seven and Gone Girl, and his knack for adapting global sensations like The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, I am confident that an English-language Squid Game “offshoot” would be a captivating addition to his oeuvre.

As a cinephile myself, I’m thrilled by the news that acclaimed director David Fincher might be delving into a potential spin-off of the global phenomenon, Squid Game, in English. This could very well be his next captivating venture!

According to Deadline, the renowned director behind movies like Seven, Gone Girl, and the critically-acclaimed Mindhunter series on Netflix, is set to begin working on a new project in the coming year.

The show’s creators haven’t decided yet if it will be a remake of the popular South Korean series or an entirely new story taking place in the same universe, but there are rumors that Dennis Kelly (known for Channel 4’s Utopia) is working on scripts set within the United States.

Significantly, Fincher has previously delved into remaking films, including a 2011 adaptation of Stieg Larsson’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, which followed a prior version made in Swedish.

The announcement arrives as Netflix readies the long-awaited second season of Squid Game, slated for release on Boxing Day 2024. Viewers are excited to find out if it will rekindle the unexpected global popularity that marked its initial airing.

It appears that the streaming platform believes they’ve found a successful recipe, as they’ve already ordered another season of the South Korean thriller, marking it as its last (and upcoming) one for release in the next year.

In a recent statement, creator Hwang Dong-hyuk revealed: “The intense collision of Gi-hun’s world and that of the Front Man will carry on until the end of our series in the upcoming season 3, set to air next year.

Should Fincher’s Squid Game project progress, it would mark another addition to his extensive collaboration with Netflix, dating back to his involvement in their inaugural original series, House of Cards.

He has gone on to create awards fare Mank and The Killer for the streaming service, as well as directing episodes of Mindhunter and producing animated anthology Love, Death + Robots.
