In the second season of Netflix’s Squid Game, another blockbuster addition to the Korean-language TV series, there’s been a viral moment that’s garnering attention for the wrong reasons. Similar to the editing mishaps in Game of Thrones, the creators of Squid Game Season 2 made an oversight in the editing room by neglecting to remove a cameraman from the frame during a critical gunfight scene.
It’s no secret that the Internet remains unchanged, and the cinematographer of “Squid Game” has become an undeniable sensation across various social media platforms, earning viral meme status.
Thus far, memes based on the popular series “Squid Game” are in their early development. People are quick to highlight production errors, such as adding circles and arrows to still images, or cleverly editing reels and TikToks using show footage for comedic effect. Initially, jokes centered around phrases like “Someone from Squid Game/Netflix is about to lose their job over this.” However, some viewers are delving deeper, questioning if these errors mirror those seen frequently in Game of Thrones’ final season (coffee cups accidentally left on set and visible in finished scenes), or if they hint at a larger secret behind the Squid Games themselves.
Is Squid Game S2’s “Cameraman” an Intentional Character?
Some viewers speculate that the camera operator might be a real character on Squid Game, hinting at a potential revelation when Season 3 airs.
In a high-energy sequence, we see a group of players, led by returning champion Player 456 (Seong Gi-hun, played by Lee Jung-jae), and their allies launching a fierce uprising against the staff within the game facility. Their goal is to seize control of the game masters and secure freedom for themselves. The insurgents overpower certain workers, grabbing their weapons, and taking hold of the dormitory area. They then progress through the game’s infrastructure.
However, what Gi-hun and his associates are unaware of is that their second-in-command, Player 001, is actually the enigmatic Front Man who orchestrates these games. This rebellion was destined for failure from the outset: most rebel players ultimately meet their demise, and the Front Man recaptures Gi-hun once more.
During the short-lived uprising, the rebels strategically destroyed the surveillance cameras at the game facility, a move that was part of their larger scheme – a scheme that included Player 001/The Front Man. Some spectators speculate that “the cameraman” is an international figure, serving as a way for The Front Man to obtain captivating footage of the rebellion for the high-ranking individuals who watch these events as sport. It’s possible that this entire uprising was just another game, designed to identify which participants would participate in the rebellion, and to prolong the number of players involved?
Surely, there are several issues with that theory – for instance, no one else in the scene seems to notice the cameraman, and he only appears in a single frame. However, as one fan succinctly notes, “Perhaps you didn’t watch Squid Game… because the higher-ups watch the game unfold via cameras, so even if camera operators find themselves in the shot, they can be mistaken for that.
Regardless of what the actual story reveals, fans of Squid Game have undeniably made this scene a particularly notable and amusing highlight in the show’s history.
Squid Game Seasons 1 & 2 are streaming on Netflix.
