Squid Game season 2 will feature games cut from the first season

As I delve deeper into the captivating world of Squid Game, I find myself utterly enthralled by the man behind this global phenomenon – Hwang Dong-hyuk. His life story is as compelling as the series he has created. Having lost his father at a young age and growing up in a financially struggling family, Hwang Dong-hyuk’s experiences mirror those of the characters in his show, giving it an authenticity that resonates with audiences worldwide.

Previously, while casually browsing through YouTube last year, the mastermind behind the intense South Korean series titled Squid Game, Hwang Dong-hyuk, encountered a video that left him momentarily stunned.

He mentions, “It was those African children playing the game similar to Grandmother’s Footsteps, known as Red Light, Green Light, which gained notoriety in Squid Game.” Hwang expresses his astonishment about how rapidly and extensively the show has become popular worldwide. Interestingly enough, he notes that this series is intended for audiences beyond children.

Regardless if the children had seen the 18+ rated TV series, the video clip, along with many similar ones, demonstrated its impact was universal. Even in the aftermath of the Covid pandemic, a Korean adaptation of The Hunger Games gained global popularity.

In late 2021, Netflix’s most successful series to date, a chilling tale about children’s games played by financially struggling individuals wearing green tracksuits on an enigmatic island, was unveiled. This show held the top spot in Netflix’s global top ten list in 94 countries, including the USA, India, Brazil, and Turkey. Within its first 28 days of release, it was watched by over 142 million households for a staggering total of 1.65 billion hours. This undoubtedly marked a significant cultural phenomenon, igniting renewed curiosity worldwide about Korean culture.

Hwang Dong-hyuk’s direction in a Drama Series won him an Emmy for Outstanding Directing, making him both the first Asian and first native Korean to win in this category. This was also the first time a non-English series emerged victorious. Interestingly, he’s still taken aback by seeing African children imitating his work.

53-year-old Hwang remarks, “It was truly surprising to realize the extent of our impact and influence in today’s world,” considering the unexpected worldwide success of Squid Game.

On Boxing Day, the games resume anew, as we’re gearing up for the third and final series in 2025. Interestingly enough, when Hwang was working on the first season, he hadn’t even entertained thoughts about a potential second installment or a sequel at that point. Instead, he approached the project thinking that he would be content if the story concluded with the last scene of season one.

In that particular scene, Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae), who emerged victorious in the grueling six-day games, stands on the brink of boarding a plane with his staggering 45.6 billion Korean won (equivalent to approximately £25 million) winnings. However, he suddenly has second thoughts. The narrative resumes three years later, with Gi-hun now resolved to unmask those responsible for this lethal game and bring an end to their cruel pastime.

Speaking personally, I can attest to the fact that Director Hwang’s creative process during the production of the first season was incredibly intense, as it led me to lose a few teeth along the way – quite literally! The breathtaking success of this show has only added to his burden, as he now faces even greater pressure in crafting future seasons.

He remarks, “This period feels like the most hectic stretch in all of my life, and it’s lasted for about two years now. Even though the first season was incredibly successful, I’ve barely had a moment to rest, as I’ve been tirelessly working on the upcoming season and developing it.

Despite his fame and success, he mentions that they haven’t significantly altered his life because he’s been too busy to savor them. He explains, “For the last five years, starting from 2019, I’ve essentially been engrossed in the Squid Game universe, leaving little time or space for other changes in my life.

Additionally, Hwang is openly forthright about his reasons for returning. “It’s all about money!” he chuckles. “Though the initial season garnered massive worldwide success, I must admit that I didn’t reap significant benefits. Participating in the second season will, therefore, partially balance out the profits from the first one.

The irony lies in the fact that his work is driven by a firm criticism of late-stage capitalism, yet some people will do astonishing things just for money. He points out that Squid Game was designed to convey a significant message to its viewers.

As a child, I sadly lost my father at just five years old, which left our family in a financially challenging situation, to put it mildly. My mother worked tirelessly to support us, and I can honestly say that I’ve walked the path of poverty and struggle to make ends meet. Now, as I watch these players grapple with debt, I find a strange sense of camaraderie, knowing all too well what it means to swim against life’s financial currents.

During the 1990s, when I attended college, our generation was deeply engaged in the democratic movement in Korea. As a result, much of my twenties were spent contemplating, as well as actively participating in, these protests. My thoughts often centered around political messaging and the concept of capitalism. This background has shaped me into a filmmaker with a keen interest in exploring themes of global inequality and capitalism.

Despite Squid Game’s first season being filled with engaging cliffhangers that made it impossible to resist binge-watching, its underlying goal, as stated by Hwang, was to provoke thought. Similarly, the second series aims to continue this trend, given the abundance of global issues that demand reflection today.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, we produced season one, but as we started working on season two, the pandemic had ended. Regarding whether the world has improved since then, I’m not confident it has.

As a movie enthusiast, I must say that the second season of this series introduces an intriguing voting mechanism for the players. Remarkably, this was penned and captured on camera during the same year when some of the world’s major powers held crucial elections. This wasn’t a coincidence; it feels like the creators wanted to echo or reflect the real-world political climate.

According to Hwang, we’ve been observing a lot more discord and separation, not just locally but globally. The challenges humanity is facing are immense: climate change poses a great crisis, and there are numerous wars and conflicts ongoing in various parts of the world. These issues have become prevalent worldwide, and they were themes I aimed to explore in season two.

The fact that series two of Squid Game isn’t going to transform into a replica of Radio 4’s Moral Maze doesn’t imply that Gi-Hun won’t come back, armed and furious, with his quest leading him back to the island and once again into the competition. This return implies that there will be fresh games for him to engage in.

In the process of developing Season 2, we reintroduced some games that weren’t included in Season 1. Additionally, the lessons learned from creating Season 1 allowed us to develop new games. This is what Hwang mentioned.
