Squid Game Split Its Story for Final Two Seasons for One Simple Reason

As someone who has been around long enough to remember when television series were often confined to a single season, I must say that the news of Squid Game extending to three seasons is nothing short of astounding. Initially, I recall the days when a show’s creator would labor tirelessly over a single season, and that would be it. But here we are, with Hwang Dong-hyuk meticulously crafting not one, not two, but three seasons of this captivating series.

The hit series Squid Game is set to bring its thrilling life-or-death contests back for viewers not just once, but twice, as the show has announced that it will end after two more seasons. Fans won’t have to wait long for Season 2, which is scheduled to stream on Netflix starting December 26th. This time around, the protagonist, Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae), aims to rejoin the games with the goal of rescuing the other contestants.

It was widely anticipated that Squid Game would receive another season, given its status as one of Netflix’s highest-earning shows ever. However, when Netflix revealed that the series creator, Hwang Dong-hyuk, intends to wrap up the story with two additional seasons, many were taken aback. Nevertheless, Hwang has a solid and logical explanation for extending the show over these next two seasons.

Squid Game Needed to Be Three Seasons Long

In a recent conversation with Entertainment Weekly, Hwang shared that he initially conceived seasons 2 and 3 as one continuous narrative. It’s worth noting that Hwang took approximately a decade to craft the first season of Squid Game, which premiered on Netflix in 2021. However, since then, he has remarkably produced two additional seasons within just three years.

Initially, Hwang found himself writing much more content than he initially planned due to the shorter time frame he had set for himself. “That’s how it transpired,” he explained further. “However, I ended up with an abundance of episodes.” Realizing this could be overwhelming, he decided to split the series into two parts. The second season of Squid Game will premiere on Netflix in December this year, and a third season is expected to follow in 2025, although the exact release date has yet to be revealed. We can expect a more definite release date for Season 3 once Season 2 has been premiered.

Initially, Season 1 of the South Korean thriller Squid Game created a worldwide sensation. When it was first released, it held the title for the most viewed single TV season on Netflix (though this record has since been surpassed by Season 1 of Wednesday). However, during the decade-long development process leading up to Season 1, Hwang Dong-hyuk hadn’t envisioned a second season.

Hwang Dong-hyuk Only Planned One Season of Squid Game

Originally, when I started working on the first season, there weren’t any ideas or thoughts in my mind about more seasons. In Korea, it’s not typical for series to have multiple seasons, and given how demanding Season 1 was, I didn’t feel confident enough to commit to another round of work where I would be the writer, director, and creator all along.

With the approach of Season 2, the excitement for “Squid Game” has rekindled among fans. It’s predicted that next Halloween will see a surge of pink and green jumpsuit costumes. In anticipation of Season 2’s premiere, Google has also joined in the fun. Type “Squid Game” into your browser, and you’ll find a card at the bottom of the screen. Click it, and you can experience the iconic Red Light, Green Light game from Season 1 right on your screen!

In addition to Lee Jung-jae, Season 2 will bring back Lee Byung-hun as the enigmatic leader of the games, called Front Man. Wi Ha-jun comes back as Hwang Jun-ho, the detective determined to dismantle these games, while Gong Yoo takes on the role once again as the Recruiter, who convinces susceptible participants to gamble with their lives for monetary gain.
