As a long-time fan of the Stalker series, I must say that my excitement for Stalker 2 was palpable. However, after diving into the game, I find myself grappling with a sense of disappointment tinged with intrigue. The game is undeniably captivating, but it’s clear that it’s not quite living up to its full potential yet.
Since its release, Stalker 2 has received generally positive feedback, but it’s evident that the game still falls short of its full potential. One of the main criticisms from players is that the advertised A-Life 2.0 system, which developers hyped up years ago, seems to be lacking in the final product. The absence of information about this system on the game’s Steam page has led some players to suspect that this might be a case of misleading advertising. However, the lead team at GSC Game World, who are a married couple, attribute these issues to unforeseen bugs and communication mishaps.
In simpler terms, A-Life 2.0 refers to the artificial intelligence controlling Non-Player Characters (NPCs) within the game. The initial Steam description depicted it as a system that simulates life, aiming to make the game world appear more vibrant than ever. Unfortunately, in Stalker 2, the AI turned out to be one of its less effective aspects, with players growing frustrated due to enemies seemingly appearing from nowhere and immediately pursuing them.
As an enthusiastic player, I’ve picked up that the CEO of GSC Game World, Ievgen Grygorovych, has shared some insights with IGN about the A-Life 2.0 system. He mentioned that for this system to function optimally, it necessitates a significantly larger play area than what’s currently available in the game to effectively generate Non-Player Characters (NPCs). The reason behind shrinking the spawn radius was due to the developers grappling with optimization, particularly when it comes to managing memory resources. In his words, “To ensure its smooth operation, we had to optimize certain aspects, but these optimizations have impacted A-Life’s performance in many instances, not as it was intended to.
According to Ievgen, although the current setup appears severely flawed and inoperable, we’re focusing our efforts on optimizing it to allocate more resources to the A-Life system. This should expand the area where A-Life can be observed visually.
In my enthusiasm as a fan, I’d like to share an insight I gathered regarding the removal of A-Life 2.0 from Stalker 2’s Steam page. According to creative director Maria Grygorovych, this decision stemmed from a casual discussion with a team member in marketing. They pointed out that many new players might not be familiar with the concept of A-Life. To ensure clarity and accessibility for these newcomers, Maria plans to rephrase the description in a more straightforward manner.
Maria added, “He performed the action without any prior consultation or approval. He didn’t bother to inquire if there were issues with A-Life, which we indeed had. Given that it was a complex and challenging system, his actions came as a surprise before the release. I became aware of this due to Reddit posts, as we finalized the Steam page in 2021. To be honest, I was taken aback by this revelation.
On its Steam page, Stalker 2 is currently described as having “state-of-the-art artificial intelligence systems designed to captivate even the most seasoned gamers.” In our review of Stalker 2, Andy refers to it as “the best yet most faulty game” he’s played this year. This sentiment seems to be a common thread in the response to the survival FPS so far: a promising foundation that’s currently marred by a plethora of bugs and polish issues.
