STALKER 2 Follows A Franchise Tradition By Not Featuring Co-Op, But Installing The Right Mods Makes Other STALKER Games Less Lonely

As someone who has spent countless hours exploring the post-apocalyptic world of the S.T.A.L.K.er series, I must say that the community’s dedication to creating mods for these games is nothing short of astounding. The X-Ray Multiplayer Extension for Call of Pripyat in particular has been a true labor of love and an incredible achievement.

As a die-hard movie buff eagerly waiting for the sequel, I’ve finally got my hands on STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl, and it’s been worth the long wait. The game beautifully captures what made the original series so compelling. However, as much as I’m enjoying STALKER 2, there’s one aspect missing that fans have yearned for – multiplayer interaction. Regrettably, at launch, we don’t get to experience any multiplayer features, and although there’s a possibility of it being added later, unfortunately, the co-op campaign isn’t on the agenda yet.

Although STALKER 2 does not currently offer a conventional co-op mode, potential future multiplayer elements could build upon the playable versions from earlier games. To be frank, the previous PvP modes in the STALKER series fell short of expectations when compared to the intricate multiplayer experiences found in games like Counter-Strike. The STALKER universe has always been rich with complex factions and groups of Stalkers navigating the perilous Zone, and though it may pose technical challenges, traveling together is essential for survival within the dangerous world of STALKER.

STALKER 2’s Lack Of Co-Op Is No Surprise

Following A Long-Lived Franchise Tradition

The absence of cooperative play in STALKER 2 might disappoint some players, but it’s hardly unexpected for longtime fans of the series. The STALKER franchise has consistently aimed to provide a deeply immersive and challenging single-player experience. Including cooperative play could potentially diminish the immersion and fear factors that define the STALKER series, and would require the developers to redesign the game from scratch with co-op in mind, making it a complex task to implement without compromising the original vision for the game.

Given that STALKER 2 has taken so long to come out since the original series, it’s wiser to capitalize on the franchise’s strongest points instead of trying out new features such as co-op gameplay. Those expecting a future co-op update for STALKER 2 might be let down, but the comprehensive modding capabilities provided by Unreal Engine 5 could lead to community-created multiplayer modifications. However, players will have to be patient before they can enjoy the planned multiplayer update, as developers are currently focusing on refining STALKER 2 for a smoother gaming experience. The recently released 1.0.1 patch addresses more than 650 known issues.

Call Of Pripyat Has A Proper Multiplayer Mod

Giving Players The True Co-Op STALKER Experience

In contrast to the official versions, there’s no built-in cooperative mode in any of the four editions of the game STALKER. However, some passionate members within the community have developed their own functional co-op mods. These mods exhibit varying degrees of success, but the X-Ray Multiplayer Extension for STALKER: Call of Pripyat, created by the xMPE Team on ModDB, has come the closest to replicating the authentic cooperative STALKER experience. Remarkably, this mod is still being actively developed even today. The latest update, from November 10, marked the launch of a full cooperative mode for Call of Pripyat, with many features from the single-player game restored.

The X-Ray Multiplayer Extension operates smoothly for players, enabling them to enjoy the entirety of the revamped cooperative campaign, along with some extra modding options. This significantly reduces the sense of isolation in the post-apocalyptic open world. Although it still has a few minor problems requiring fixes, it’s the most stable version yet and represents an incredible community accomplishment. Given how old the original STALKER games are, this is particularly noteworthy. The idea of incorporating multiplayer mods into classic games is becoming increasingly feasible for more games as time goes on, with the renowned Skyrim co-op mod serving as a trailblazer.

Multiplayer For Other STALKER Games Is Messier

STALKER 1 & 2 Don’t Have The Same Solutions

Regrettably for enthusiasts eager to explore the multiplayer aspect of either STALKER: Shadow Of Chernobyl or STALKER: Clear Sky, it should be noted that mods for these older STALKER games are generally less stable and not as fully developed compared to their successor, STALKER: Call of Pripyat. Although there have been instances where cooperative play has been achieved by expanding upon the X-Ray Multiplayer Extension, these attempts often encounter various bugs, frequent crashes, and missing features such as saving or seamless open-world gameplay. Consequently, while it is feasible to engage in multiplayer with the older STALKER games, the experience falls significantly short of the more refined one offered by STALKER: Call of Pripyat.

Despite doubts about whether players can tackle the modding challenges in the considerably older versions of the game STALKER, there remains optimism regarding the potential for community-created content in STALKER 2’s future. Given the significant role that mods have played in STALKER’s continued popularity over time, the developers are actively planning to foster community creations by incorporating a modding toolkit specifically designed for Xbox Series X/S.

The developers intend to assist and empower the modding community in the long run, and the upgraded Unreal Engine 5 will significantly simplify editing compared to its predecessors, providing an ideal platform for fans to breathe life into their ideas. Although it’s a daunting task to incorporate a genuine cooperative mode into STALKER 2, the new version is breathing fresh energy into the beloved cult-classic series, inspiring the vast modding community to give it another shot.
