Stalker 2 is Profitable Enough that ‘Some Negotiations are Underway’ for Netflix Adaptation

As a long-time follower of the Stalker series and its tumultuous journey through development hell, I must admit that my heart skipped a beat upon hearing the news about GSC Game World’s Netflix negotiations for a potential Stalker adaptation. The prospect is both exhilarating and nerve-wracking, as I’ve seen this franchise rise, fall, and rise again like a phoenix over the years.

Despite being criticized for its numerous bugs and incomplete features, adhering to what’s often referred to as the “Eurojank” style, Stalker 2 could potentially become a major success. Recently, the game and its creators have reached an impressive milestone – it’s earning more than anticipated, which has sparked some optimism among developers about a potential Netflix adaptation for the Stalker series.

The news originated directly from Maksym Krippa, a team member at GSC Game World. In an interview with Forbes Ukraine, he shared details about the triumph of Stalker 2 and the development studio’s forthcoming strategies.

As a gamer, I was thrilled when Krippa shared the news: Stalker 2 is now financially successful, potentially paving the way for more content. On top of that, there’s even talk about a Stalker series on Netflix, something GSC Game World is currently discussing and negotiating!

Our efforts have paid off, as the project is now profitable due to our successful sales. Prior to launch, our team dedicated countless hours, often working around the clock. They were deeply invested in this project, and their dedication was particularly strong given the ongoing conflict. Our goal was to instill hope and pride in our country, demonstrating that Ukrainians are capable of creating projects of exceptional quality.

Krippa mentions that he’s hoping we can stream a Netflix series soon, as some discussions are ongoing, but the matter is still being worked out.

Krippa is boldly discussing Netflix negotiations for the game’s succession, but this doesn’t guarantee approval. In fact, there’s a possibility that Netflix could terminate it after just two seasons. Regardless, this presents an opportunity for the Stalker series to regain attention in the spotlight once more.

Remarkably successful, Stalker 2 has proven itself even without significant promotional efforts, highlighting the fervor of its fanbase as it’s the long-awaited follow-up to an earlier title.

Not the First Time Stalker Would Be On-Screen

If you’re not already familiar, there’s an opportunity for you to see a live-action portrayal of what the story of Stalker might look like. In 1979, a film based on it was directed by Andrei Tarkovsky. At that time, Ukraine was under the Soviet Union and it was seven years before the Chornobyl nuclear disaster occurred.

The highly acclaimed film “Stalker” was based on the 1972 Russian science fiction novel “Roadside Picnic.” All the same, the movie, the novel “Roadside Picnic,” and the “Stalker” video games share a common theme: “The Zone” and its scavengers or Stalkers. It’s important to mention that the games incorporated the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone into their storyline (it was a fitting connection).

It’s uncertain at this point which “Stalker” game Krippa intends for Netflix to turn into a series, but given the context, it seems probable that it will be derived from the video games. However, keep in mind that the agreement is currently being discussed and finalized, so no definite decisions have been made yet.
