Game studio GSC Game World has provided an updated version, known as Stalker: Legends of the Zone Enhanced Edition, to gamers on PC, Xbox, and PlayStation for free. This new edition improves visuals and offers better performance through modern optimizations. However, it’s received a wave of negative reviews right off the bat due to the censorship of Russian content within the game.
The Ukrainian version of the Russian novel “Roadside Picnic” by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky has gained a significant fanbase among Russians in the Stalker video game series. However, due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine causing numerous civilian casualties, developer GSC Game World chose to eliminate Russian languages and imagery from Soviet times from their releases as a response.
Although the original Stalker Trilogy remains unaltered on PC, the developers’ Enhanced Edition games no longer offer the original Russian voiceovers. After the launch of these remastered versions, players on Steam have been criticizing them heavily due to the elimination of the Russian content by leaving negative reviews.
The refurbished versions of the initial Stalker Trilogy have some significant flaws, such as an odd, blurry appearance despite turning off the game’s FSR image reconstruction feature. Despite running more slowly than before, the game provides a smoother and more reliable experience overall, with fewer crashes, freezes, and major issues that were prevalent in the original versions.
It’s good news for PC gamers that GSC Game World hasn’t taken down the original games from sale, choosing instead to release its own remastered versions. Those who purchase the remasters can immediately play the original versions as well; anyone who already owns the originals also gains access to the updated game editions.
Stalker: Legends of the Zone Enhanced Edition presents some unusual problems. While the remasters appear to be good choices, it’s likely that a mod from Steam Workshop will soon restore the cut Russian content. Unfortunately, there are genuine issues like the oddly fuzzy graphics, newly surfaced glitches, and other concerns.
