Star-Lord’s Jaw-Dropping Makeover: Marvel Unveils His Most Retro Costume Yet!

In the upcoming cosmic adventure titled “Imperial” for Marvel Comics, Star-Lord (Peter Quill) will sport a revamped appearance and costume. Throughout his comic book history, Star-Lord has undergone various changes, including a facelift for his twin blasters. For this new storyline, Peter Quill will revert to one of his classic costumes, reminiscent of his initial appearance in Marvel Preview #4 from 1976. The iconic duster jacket popularized by the Marvel Cinematic Universe films has been swapped for a shorter jacket that matches Star-Lord’s pants in color. It remains to be seen how long Peter will maintain this fresh new look before it gets battle-worn during the impending conflict.

In a recent development, Marvel unveiled a collection of covers for the debut issue #1 of “Imperial,” penned by writer Jonathan Hickman and illustrated by Federico Vicentini and Iban Coello. Among these covers, one is particularly notable, designed by Todd Nauck, and it bears the title “Iconic Variant Cover,” possibly referencing the iconic costume associated with it. The remaining covers showcase the primary characters involved in the storyline of “Imperial.” These include the Hulk and She-Hulk, who are tasked with reestablishing order on Sakaar; Nova and Star-Lord, working together to avert a catastrophe that could plunge the galaxy into chaos; and the Shi’ar Empire, whose internal conflicts escalate as they vie for control of their throne!

Jonathan Hickman has made significant impacts on the Avengers, Fantastic Four, and X-Men storylines. Just as he reshaped those Marvel franchises, he intends to do the same for the cosmic side of the universe with “Imperial,” a four-part event series that will pave the way for an entirely new interconnected universe of space-themed series.

Hickman expressed great enthusiasm about the project, given his deep-rooted affection for everything Marvel Cosmic. Our aim is to essentially replicate what we achieved with the latest Ultimate series across all our space titles. However, instead of ‘Imperial’ functioning primarily as a world-building tool, it will serve more as a significant event. In other words, it’s going to be something like the ‘Ultimate Invasion,’ but focused on this unique part of the Marvel Universe. The art team is doing an outstanding job, and we’re all buzzing with anticipation about what’s unfolding in this particular sector of the Marvel Universe.

Federico Vicentini and Iban Coello are two of Marvel’s Stormbreaker artists, and they’re introducing fresh concepts for beloved characters similar to how Star-Lord has been redesigned. ComicBook had the opportunity to chat with these talented artists, and we’re excited to share some sneak peeks into interior art from the first issue!

According to Vicentini, collaborating with Hickman presents an exciting opportunity. He’s a big fan of Hickman’s scripts, admiring the exceptional dialogue and meticulous attention to detail in the story’s environment. Previously, he was only familiar with Hickman as a reader. The chance to work alongside him and Iban, an outstanding artist, is truly remarkable. Vicentini is putting in extra effort to deliver his finest work, and he’s enjoying every moment of it!

I’m thrilled to be part of this project,” I expressed, “and the opportunity to craft these fresh characters and costumes is an absolute joy. Collaborating with Hickman was never on my radar before, but it’s an exhilarating mix of excitement and awe given the scale of his work in the scripts. I can hardly wait to meet this challenge head-on and deliver top-notch results!
