As a long-time Trekkie who’s been following the saga since the early ’90s, I can confidently say that the latest episode of Star Trek: Lower Decks has sent me into orbit! The romantic exploration of Garak and Bashir’s relationship in an alternate universe feels like a dream come true for fans who have been shipping these two for decades. It’s a testament to the enduring chemistry between Andrew Robinson and Alexander Siddig that their characters continue to captivate us even in new dimensions!
In the penultimate episode of “Star Trek: Lower Decks,” titled “Fissure Quest,” a long-standing fan dream spanning three decades is finally acknowledged, albeit in an unexpected fashion. The series has officially validated the romantic speculations surrounding characters from “Deep Space Nine” – Dr. Julian Bashir and Mr. Elim Garak – but with a twist: their relationship unfolds in an alternate reality, where they are depicted as a married couple alongside beloved franchise figures such as T’Pol from “Enterprise” and Harry Kim from “Voyager.
Mike McMahan, the producer of Trek, confirmed a popular fan theory by stating that he has appreciated the romantic chemistry between Andrew J. Robinson as Garak and Alexander Siddig as Bashir on Deep Space Nine for the past 30 years. He also hinted at exploring their relationship further in the multiverse, saying they will be spending time together as newlyweds exploring the universe. In a joking tone, he reminded fans to “never go to bed angry” and “never break the prime directive – unless absolutely necessary.
1993 marked the beginning of a significant relationship as Andrew Robinson made a guest appearance in “Deep Space Nine’s” episode “Past Prologue.” The onscreen chemistry between Robinson’s character, Garak, a humble tailor, and Alexander Siddig’s character, the sincere doctor, was palpable. This spark ignited Robinson’s one-time role into a recurring character throughout the series.
For many years, these two actors consistently ignited enthusiasm among fans regarding their characters’ possible romantic relationship. They often brought up this topic during conventions, which allegedly prompted producers to request them to halt the discussions according to an article from 1998 in Metro. In his book, The Fifty-Year Mission: The Next 25 Years, Siddig disclosed that the audience was initially unsure of the character’s sexuality. However, the introduction of Cardassian Garak at an early stage added a hint of ambiguous sexual tension to the character.
Speaking as a film enthusiast, I’ll admit to being quite frank about my character choice. When it came to Garak, I couldn’t help but think, “Why not take a chance? After all, Bashir is strikingly handsome.” There’s a particularly intense close-up of Garak in ‘Deep Space Nine’ that leaves no doubt he could devour him if he wanted to. In the ‘What We Left Behind’ documentary, I openly acknowledged that Garak harbored an intimate desire for Bashir.
In the 1990s TV series, no LGBTQ+ couple was developed, indicating the limited portrayal of such relationships on television during that time. Ira Steven Behr, the producer of Deep Space Nine, confessed in What We Left Behind that he regretted not being more assertive to make Garak openly gay. Later, Ronald D. Moore expressed remorse in a 2008 AfterElton interview for not including queer characters, admitting that he felt “guilty” for the missed opportunity.
Though recent Star Trek productions like Discovery have openly featured LGBTQ+ relationships, such as Stamets and Culber’s bond, this popular pairing was not officially acknowledged until recently. In fact, the actors themselves supported this relationship by performing fan-created scripts over Zoom in 2020, indicating their dedication to the connection.
Despite the fact that the characters in the “Lower Decks” spin-off are technically alternative versions, including Dr. Bashir as an Emergency Medical Hologram, this show signifies a notable recognition of a trailblazing vessel that didn’t receive its deserved attention during its initial broadcast.
