In a captivating twist that hinted at things to come, Star Trek: Lower Decks subtly suggested that Captain Carol Freeman (Dawnn Lewis) would find herself in identical positions across two distinct universes by the conclusion of season 5. Before concluding its run on Paramount+, this groundbreaking series offered an innovative exploration of Star Trek’s Multiverse in season 5. The Defiant-class starship Anaximander, under Captain William Boimler (Jack Quaid), embarked on a journey through alternate realities, ultimately safeguarding the Prime Timeline from being expunged from the Multiverse by the USS Cerritos.

View Urgent ForecastIn the fifth season of Star Trek: Lower Decks, we were introduced to Starbase 80, an ancient and unpopular outpost run by the United Federation of Planets. Commander Kassia Nox (played by Nicole Byer) attempted to highlight the station’s bright side in episode 5, “Starbase 80?!”, but Lieutenant Beckett Mariner (Tawny Newsome) found it less than appealing after her temporary exile there. However, Starbase 80 took on a fresh importance and purpose, as did Captain Carol Freeman, towards the end of Star Trek: Lower Decks season 5.
Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 5’s Premiere Foreshadowed Captain Freeman Going To Starbase 80
Lower Decks’ Finale Reframes Starbase 80 As The New Deep Space Nine
In the premiere of Star Trek: Lower Decks season 5, titled “Dos Cerritos,” the USS Cerritos ventured into an alternate reality. A surprising twist was introduced as this universe’s Captain Freeman was not the mother we know, Captain Carol Freeman, but her daughter, Becky Freeman, who had taken command instead. As it turned out, the original Captain Freeman was reassigned to Starbase 80 due to numerous mistakes, and her daughter assumed the captain’s role. Although it wasn’t immediately clear at the time, Lower Decks subtly set up the future mission of the Prime Timeline’s Captain Freeman.
At the conclusion of Star Trek: Lower Decks season 5, Captain Freeman was moved to Starbase 80 instead of it being a form of discipline, as observed in an alternate universe. Instead, she was entrusted with a significant assignment: managing Starbase 80 and leading Starfleet’s investigation into the Multiverse. This new position suits Carol well, who had grown beyond piloting her California Class starship and sought a more complex challenge and increased responsibility.
Captain Freeman Made The USS Cerritos Great In Star Trek: Lower Decks
The Cerritos Is The Enterprise Of The California Class
In the universe of Star Trek: Lower Decks season 5, Captain Carol Freeman might have struggled, but in our primary timeline, Captain Freeman was on an upward trajectory within Starfleet. Despite her disdain for the California Class starship Starfleet assigned to her, Captain Freeman worked diligently to demonstrate that her vessel and crew were unparalleled in Starfleet’s ranks. Her daughter, Lt. Beckett Mariner, wasn’t always cooperative, but Captain Freeman’s relentless determination eventually earned her the recognition she deserved.
In Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 3, Mariner and her crew discovered that other California Class starships within Starfleet were envious of the USS Cerritos, earning the nickname “the USS Enterprise among the California Class.” Captain Freeman’s command over the Cerritos saw them thwarting the Pakleds and eventually saving the galaxy from the threat posed by disgraced ex-Starfleet Academy cadet Nicholas Locarno (Robert Duncan McNeill) and a potentially catastrophic soliton wave in the final episode of Star Trek: Lower Decks. The USS Cerritos proved to be a heroic vessel under Captain Freeman’s leadership.
In one universe, Captain Freeman saw Starbase 80 as a form of punishment. However, in the main timeline, it serves as an extraordinary chance for Captain Freeman to make a Multiverse-changing difference. The fifth season of Star Trek: Lower Decks on Paramount+ was meticulously designed by showrunner Mike McMahan and his team to be the most ambitious and gratifying for fans, as can be seen upon rewatching the series.
