As a long-time Trekkie who has seen more episodes of Star Trek than I care to count, the upcoming movie “Star Trek: Section 31” has me absolutely thrilled! The trailer alone is enough to send shivers down my spine and make my Klingon battle cry sound like a mere squeak.
The trailer for Star Trek: Section 31 gives off a suspenseful spy vibe, as suggested by the video dropped by Paramount+ this past weekend. This two-minute sneak peek features Michelle Yeoh reprising her role as Philippa Georgiou, formerly an emperor and now a club owner who’s teaming up with Starfleet’s clandestine unit. The film is set to debut on Paramount+ this coming Friday, January 24th.
In contrast to its potential streaming release, Section 31 maintains several notable advantages as a film rather than a series. The latest trailer boasts striking set designs and special effects, blending practical and digital wonders. The movie opens with an exterior shot of the space station housing Georgiou’s nightclub, Baraam, which lies outside Federation territory. Within its walls, it’s evident that Georgiou enjoys her reign over this minuscule universe, yet her tranquility is shattered by the arrival of Section 31 agent Alok (Omari Hardwick).
Alok proposes, “You have an opportunity to join the grand cosmic events once more,” to which Georgiou responds playfully, “How adorable!

The trailer certainly provides a glimpse into the high risks involved, despite the plot being somewhat enigmatic. It appears that most of the action unfolds on planetary landscapes or inside space stations, deviating from the typical command deck setting in Star Trek. As for the “black ops” angle, expect a significant increase in physical confrontations compared to the usual peaceful nature of this futuristic franchise.
This film focuses on Section 31, a covert and self-governing intelligence agency hidden within the United Federation of Planets, operating alongside Starfleet. Some viewers find this premise contentious because it challenges the peaceful vision that creator Gene Roddenberry envisioned for this universe, where war and systemic violence are absent.
Simultaneously, the film serves as a platform for Yeoh’s character, Georgiou, who gained immense popularity following her debut in Star Trek: Discovery. Originating from the Mirror Universe – an alternate world where humans were more aggressive and merciless – Georgiou was once the Emperor of the Terran Empire before being transported into this dimension without a return option. A significant figure throughout the first three seasons of the series, fans have eagerly awaited her return in such an action-packed role.
On this coming Friday, the 24th of January, you’ll be able to catch the premiere of “Section 31” on Paramount+. Currently, you can also stream “Star Trek: Discovery” and a majority of the movies and shows from the franchise on that platform.
