Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Is Adding A Cute Robot Sidekick In Seeds of Salvation

In August 2025, prepare for an exhilarating new limited comic series from IDW Publishing: Star Trek: Strange New Worlds – The Seeds of Destruction. This five-issue adventure will follow the crew of Enterprise as they get a charming mechanical ally! In this perilous mission to an icy planet, they’ll uncover secrets hidden beneath its frozen surface. One of the most enticing aspects of this upcoming series is the debut of D6, a “novel robotic sidekick” who will team up with First Officer Una Chin-Riley, Science Officer Spock, Security Officer La’An Noonien-Singh, and Nurse Christine Chapel on their hazardous journey. The inclusion of this mechanical character could breathe new life into the Strange New Worlds universe.

The series is developed by writer Robbie Thompson, who’s now involved with the TV show’s fourth season, and artist Travis Mercer. Excitedly, Thompson shared his feelings about the project, saying, “Being a long-time Star Trek (long live TOS!) admirer, I was overjoyed when editor extraordinaire Heather Antos invited me to propose for a Strange New Worlds miniseries. Working on the fourth season of the Paramount+ series has been a dream fulfilled, and I can’t wait to delve deeper into this playground.

This announcement stands out due to the comic’s commitment to unveil “cosmic terrors” and to make the already mysterious Strange New Worlds even more enigmatic. Artist Travis Mercer suggested the series’ atmosphere by stating, “Having read what Robbie has planned for the Enterprise crew, I couldn’t resist this chance! The whole team is preparing a tale that will leave Strange New Worlds feeling even more bizarre! Buckle up, folks!

The “Seeds of Destruction” collection is just one piece in a bigger plan for Star Trek comics from IDW. These releases will be joined by two other five-issue limited series:

1. “Star Trek: Red Shirts“, which explores the unfortunate crew members wearing red uniforms during The Original Series time period (expected July 2025).
2. “Star Trek: Voyager – Homecoming“, a series that continues right after the final episode of the TV show as part of its 30th anniversary celebration (planned for September 2025).

In the spirit of Star Trek’s enduring tradition of introducing intriguing artificial allies, D6 might be joining the ranks. Characters like Data from The Next Generation and The Doctor from Voyager have not only brought humor but also enlightened us about humanity. This new robot companion could fill a similar role, offering comic relief as well as profound observations, while assisting the crew in overcoming challenges hidden beneath the ice.

Heather Antos, the group editor for IDW, highlighted the diverse lineup of upcoming Star Trek comic books: “We’ll be honoring nostalgia with the beloved crew from Voyager, venturing into the terrifying unknown on a Lovecraftian planet in Strange New Worlds, and challenging longstanding assumptions about uniform color and rank in an innovative way… demonstrating that IDW still has plenty more exceptional STAR TREK comics up its sleeve.
