Star Trek’s Next Series Casts a Major WWE Star as Part of the Bridge Crew

As a film enthusiast who’s had the pleasure of witnessing Becky Lynch’s transformative journey from the wrestling ring to the silver screen, I must say I am absolutely thrilled about her latest venture – Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. Her foray into the world of acting has been a rollercoaster ride, from her brief yet impactful appearance in Marvel’s Eternals (alas, her role was unfortunately scrapped) to her stellar performance in Rumble in 2021.

WWE star Becky Lynch is set to embark on an Earth-bound adventure in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy.

Previously this afternoon, the previous multiple-time WWE Women’s Champion made an announcement through her social media accounts. In a video, she expressed: “You understand, when you’ve already been the world champion, there’s only one direction left, and that’s upwards towards the stars.” She continued by saying, “I am thrilled to reveal to all of you that I have joined Star Trek: Starfleet Academy as part of the bridge team! Friends, this has been an absolutely amazing experience working with such a fantastic cast and crew. I can hardly wait for you to see it when it airs on Paramount+, and by the way, live long and prosper.

The one-of-a-kind Starfleet Academy deviates from traditional Star Trek ventures as it concentrates not on far-off galaxy explorations, but rather unfolds in a 32nd-century San Francisco setting. It centers around the initial group of cadets who’ve attended the academy in nearly a century. While the summary leaves much to the viewer’s imagination, we do know that Paul Giamatti will portray an enigmatic antagonist in the series.

The upcoming series, adopting a Young Adult narrative style, continues the storyline post-events of “Star Trek: Discovery,” venturing into the timeline uncharted before. It’s evident that they have high hopes for this project as a foundation for future endeavors. Remarkably, before even a season 1 premiere date was disclosed, it had already been renewed for a second season.

Additionally, Starfleet Academy features Bella Shepard from the Wolf Pack, Holly Hunter portraying The Chancellor, Oded Fehr as Admiral Charles Vance, Tig Notaro as Jett Reno, Mary Wiseman as Sylvia Tilly, Robert Picardo playing The Doctor, George Hawkins, Gina Yashere, Karim Diane, Zoe Steiner, Kerrice Brooks, Sandro Rosta, and Tatiana Maslany in a special appearance.

2024 saw Lynch taking a significant break from the wrestling world. Upon expiration of her contract, she chose to take some time off for other endeavors, one of which involved joining the Star Trek universe. With relatively little acting background, she appeared in 2021’s “Rumble” and a post-credits scene in Marvel’s “Eternals”, although her role was ultimately cut.
