Star Wars: Anakin Skywalker Actor Jake Lloyd Breaks Silence on Mental Health

Jake Lloyd, the actor who played young Anakin Skywalker in “Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace” back in 1999, has given an encouraging update through journalist Clayton Sandell. After battling with mental health issues for some time, Lloyd, now 35 years old, recently completed an 18-month stay at a Southern California mental health facility and seems to be doing well. As of January 2025, he continues his treatment at a new rehabilitation center where he enjoys the freedom to come and go as he pleases.

Lloyd remarked, ‘Considering the past twenty years I’ve lived, I feel quite well.’ Now, I’m ready to proceed with more treatment, counseling, and medication. People have been incredibly understanding throughout this process.

In 2008, Lloyd was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, and in March 2023, he experienced a severe psychotic episode, as his mother put it. Recently, Lisa Lloyd informed Sandell that her son has been advancing in his recovery because he’s addressing a medical issue called anosognosia. This condition, as explained by the National Alliance on Mental Illness, can stem from schizophrenia and results in a person being oblivious to their own mental health problem or having difficulty recognizing its severity.

Previously known for roles on shows like “ER” and the movie “Jingle All the Way” (1996), this individual shared that beneficial outcomes have stemmed from his stays at mental health institutions. He explained that reaching a point he referred to as “rock bottom” was crucial in order to genuinely engage in treatment, consistently take prescribed medication, and sincerely cope with his diagnosis.

As a movie buff, I shared that I can’t afford emotional ups and downs when it comes to managing my meds. Instead, they serve as a vital comfort in navigating through life’s cinematic plot twists.

In Sandell’s 2024 interview with Lisa Lloyd, she mentioned that her son was showing significant improvement and was interacting with others more frequently after spending 10 months at a mental health rehabilitation facility’s inpatient program, which lasted for 18 months.

She additionally dispelled speculations linking her son’s decision to stop acting with the initial response to “The Phantom Menace” and its impact on his mental health, stating that his schizophrenia diagnosis would have occurred regardless. “I believe it was genetic,” she added, also mentioning that Jake’s psychiatrist concurred that he was destined to develop schizophrenia.

As a devoted cinephile, I, back then, hadn’t noticed any negative vibes surrounding “The Phantom Menace” at age 8 because I kept my son offline. However, he has a soft spot for the latest Star Wars offerings, including the Disney+ series “Ahsoka”. There seems to be a common misconception that Jake dislikes Star Wars. On the contrary, he adores it!

As a movie enthusiast, I’d like to clear up a common misconception about Jake. Contrary to what many believe, his decision to step away from acting wasn’t due to Star Wars. In truth, it was our family issues that played a significant role. We were going through a divorce, and the whole situation was turbulent and challenging. It seemed like the joy of auditioning had faded for Jake.

Regarding the possibility of Jake appearing in an upcoming “Star Wars” project, possibly reprising a role similar to his character from “Phantom Menace”, Jar-Jar Binks actor Ahmed Best, Lisa stated, “Jake really enjoyed filming ‘Star Wars’. He had a great time. I’d be thrilled if he could recover enough to participate in something small. I think he might be interested in that too, but it’s not feasible for him right now. However, the rate of his improvement is uncertain, so we’ll have to wait and see.

When Sandell shared with Lloyd about the increased fan support for the actor playing Anakin Skywalker, following the 2024 update, Lloyd expressed in his recent interview, “Interacting with fans has an instant healing effect. It’s still having that therapeutic impact now. It’s beneficial and healthy. I wouldn’t hesitate to embrace it.”

Lloyd continued, “I truly value the efforts put forth by the fans. I am extremely grateful for it.
