It’s uncertain if John Boyega will play Finn in another Star Wars film, but Lucasfilm is exploring ways to advance Finn’s story through various platforms. A young-adult novel titled “Star Wars: The Last Order” is set for release on October 21st on Penguin Random House’s official website. Authored by Kwame Mbalia, the book follows Finn and Jannah after the events of “The Rise of Skywalker“, as they assist young prisoners who have been held captive by the First Order. The story will delve into similarities between the current predicament and the challenging pasts of Finn and Jannah.
After the conclusion of “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker”, the Resistance saves a ship carrying kidnapped young passengers who had been taken by the First Order. Subsequently, Finn and Jannah search for the First Order officer responsible to prevent him from endangering more children. As they do so, both former stormtroopers grapple with their complex pasts tied to serving the oppressive regime.
Initially appearing in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”, Finn was once a member of the First Order’s stormtrooper unit, but he abandoned his post when he refused to fire upon unarmed civilians on Jakku. As the Star Wars saga progressed, Finn transformed into a resolute leader within the Resistance. In “The Rise of Skywalker”, Finn encounters Jannah, another former First Order stormtrooper who deserted. Their past experiences brought them together, although the movie didn’t delve much into their relationship.
Lucasfilm is working out its future Star Wars projects and intends to delve deeply into the period beyond “Rise of Skywalker”. Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy has been assigned to direct “New Jedi Order”, a film focusing on Rey’s quest to establish a new era for the Jedi Order. Daisy Ridley is set to lead the movie, although she’s uncertain if her sequel trilogy co-stars will be involved. Previously, she hinted that there will be new characters joining the cast this time around, suggesting a fresh supporting group.
As fans eagerly anticipate whether John Boyega might reappear in the New Jedi Order or another movie, it’s thrilling to witness Lucasfilm utilizing the cross-medium canon to delve deeper into Finn’s character. The films may have underdeveloped Finn; The Rise of Skywalker omitted a clear confirmation that Finn possesses Force sensitivity, an intriguing aspect that could have added depth to his story. With so many components moving simultaneously in the sequel trilogy movies, there wasn’t always room to fully explore Finn. However, novels like The Last Order provide Lucasfilm with an opportunity to concentrate on characters and ideas that the films can’t. It seems that The Last Order will offer a detailed exploration of Finn’s background that audiences would have appreciated seeing on screen.
While not essential reading for Star Wars fans, these novels enrich the film experience and make rewatching them more enjoyable. For instance, “The Last Order” seems promising in offering an intense emotional journey; given its plotline, it’s likely to be a deeply personal quest for Finn and Jannah as they endeavor to save a group of young ones from a past they themselves have known. Fingers crossed that the novel offers intriguing perspectives on both characters, potentially deepening our understanding of them. If executed well, “The Last Order” could even enhance certain elements of “The Rise of Skywalker,” possibly transforming Finn’s encounter with Jannah into a launchpad for a moving narrative arc.
