It seems that Star Wars Battlefront 2, initially released eight years ago, is experiencing a significant resurgence in popularity. The Star Wars franchise, renowned globally, has had an eventful history since Disney’s acquisition in 2012. Over the past decade, Disney has been navigating the best path for this iconic sci-fi series, which resulted in some controversial movies, a variety of TV shows on Disney+, and numerous video game announcements that left fans slightly bewildered. Following the deal with Disney, Electronic Arts (EA) was appointed as the exclusive publisher of high-profile console Star Wars games for approximately ten years. The initial project under this arrangement was to revamp Battlefront, collaborating with the developers of Battlefield, DICE.
The initial game was satisfactory, yet it was evident that they required additional time to fully materialize their concepts. Despite Star Wars Battlefront 2 being embroiled in much debate due to its loot box controversy, the game itself was robust and well-maintained for several years, encompassing all periods of Star Wars from the original trilogy to the prequels and sequel trilogy. It was an excellent collection, but DICE shifted focus towards more Battlefield development, and unfortunately, we haven’t seen a Star Wars Battlefront 3. Nevertheless, it appears that fans remain content with the second game and continue to engage with it.
Star Wars Battlefront 2 Player Counts Rise After Andor Finale
After the conclusion of Andor and the recent May the 4th festivities, there’s been an surge in Star Wars Battlefront 2. The game saw its highest number of simultaneous players on Steam since it debuted on the platform in 2020, with nearly 8,000 gamers enjoying it over the weekend. It even ranked as the 22nd most popular game on Xbox, surpassing Destiny 2. With PlayStation users likely joining in too, it’s clear that people are having a blast with this game. Despite Electronic Arts (EA) stopping support for the game five years ago, Star Wars Battlefront 2 continues to be a hot topic on social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram.
Despite fading away from the big screen, Star Wars continues to be deeply ingrained in our culture and shows no signs of waning. The second season of Andor was popular among Star Wars enthusiasts, Fortnite abounds with Star Wars content such as the latest addition of AI Darth Vader, and so forth. It’s evident why fans would be eager to play another Star Wars game, given that Battlefront 2 is essentially the only title in its genre. Most other Star Wars games are either LEGO or single-player, but Battlefront 2 offers massive multiplayer battles with renowned characters, fulfilling a unique type of gaming desire.
Absolutely, this situation has sparked calls for another “Star Wars Battlefront 3”, though it appears that may be quite some time in the future. Currently, DICE is working on “Battlefield 6” which is expected within the next year, and they’ll need to continue supporting that game for a while after its release. It’s possible they might return to Star Wars after producing more Battlefield games for nearly a decade, but we’ll have to wait and see. Interestingly, the original “Star Wars Battlefront” series also had an unfinished third game that was almost ready to launch, but ultimately was canceled.
