Star Wars Brings Back Shadows of the Empire 11 Years After Dropping It from Canon

After more than a decade, the story from “Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire” has returned to prominence. Penguin Random House has revealed intentions to re-release Steve Perry’s novel as part of the Essential Legends Collection, a series created a few years back. The paperback edition will be available starting June 3rd. Furthermore, for the first time, an unabridged audiobook version is being released on the same day. Both the book and the audiobook can now be preordered at multiple retailers.

In the course of the recent revelation, Penguin Random House showcased a fresh design for the book that spotlights the Essential Legends Collection. Here’s where you can take a look: [insert image or link]

Originally released in April 1996, “Shadows of the Empire” was a significant component of an extensive multimedia project that encompassed comic books, video games, and action figures. All content within this venture took place between the stories of “The Empire Strikes Back” and “Return of the Jedi,” filling in the blanks as the Rebels sought to rebound from heavy losses. Perry’s novel brought forth the character of Xizor, the head of the Black Sun crime syndicate who aimed to usurp Darth Vader’s position by the Emperor’s side.

The Essential Legends Collection is a publishing project introduced to honor Lucasfilm’s 50th anniversary. Starting from 2021, it has been reissuing several timeless Star Wars Legends tales, such as the Darth Bane trilogy and the original Thrawn trilogy. Many Star Wars enthusiasts are aware that following Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm, materials previously known as the Expanded Universe (like Shadows of the Empire) were relabeled as Legends, effectively starting fresh for new canon movies, TV series, books, etc., erasing the past to make way for the new.

Disney’s move to invalidate the Expanded Universe sparked much debate among fans, as they cherished the characters and tales presented in the books. Although it doesn’t equate to reinstating the Legends novels, it’s heartening to see Disney acknowledging these stories. During the gap between the original and prequel trilogies, the Expanded Universe played a crucial role in sustaining the Star Wars franchise, proving its enduring popularity. Instead of discarding these books due to their non-canonical status, Disney decided to give them some limelight. Longtime fans who fondly remember the Expanded Universe will appreciate the chance to revisit old favorites, while newcomers can explore a distinct chapter in Star Wars storytelling history.

It’s intriguing to consider whether Lucasfilm might delve into more stories from the “Shadows of the Empire” universe in the future. Notably, several classic Star Wars video games have been remastered lately, including “Star Wars: Bounty Hunter” and “Star Wars: Episode I – Jedi Power Battles.” If the re-release of the “Shadows of the Empire” novel proves popular, there’s a possibility that the game could be next in line for such an update.
